Does not think the Petunia is anything remarkable.
Plans to produce a translation of Weismann’s Studien zur Descendenz-Theorie [1875–6] and would welcome a preface from CD.
Will do his best to provide preface for Weismann’s Studien [see Collected papers 2: 280–1].
Thanks for agreeing to write the preface for RM’s translation of Weismann.
Will arrange to meet CD when he comes to London.
Invites RM to luncheon.
CD sends his preface [to RM’s translation of August Weismann, Studies in the theory of descent (1882); Collected papers 2: 280–1].
Thanks for preface. When RM’s translation is complete, would like CD to expand it slightly to refer to overlap between Weismann’s observations and CD’s theories.
Regrets he cannot compare his work with Weismann’s in his preface as he feels “an author is never a fit judge of his own work”. [Appended note explains that RM wished CD’s work to be fully acknowledged, which was frequently not the case in continental writings.]
Is making progress with the Weismann translation.
Wonders whether Francis Darwin would give a botanical lecture at a Bayswater school.
Is glad book progresses; answers translation query.
Francis Darwin does not have time to lecture.
Sends the Fritz Müller article from Kosmos.
Has arranged for publication of his translation of Weismann.
S. H. Scudder article on sexual dimorphism in butterflies [Proc. Am. Acad. Arts & Sci. 12 (1877): 150–8].
Wishes to subscribe to RM’s translation of Weismann.
Has seen Scudder’s article.
A. R. Wallace’s article ["Animals and their native countries", Nineteenth Century 5 (1879): 247–59] is excellent.
Sends specimens from F. Müller.
Criticises A. R. Wallace’s review of Grant Allen’s The colour-sense [Nature 19 (1879): 501–5].
Comments on the branchiate trichopteran specimen from Fritz Müller sent previously.
Wants to republish Fritz Müller’s paper ["Ituna and Thyridia", Kosmos 5 (1879): 100–8] in Proceedings of the Entomological Society. [Thyridita!?]
Suggests he write to Ernst Krause about publication of translation of Fritz Müller’s paper. FM’s view of mutual protection is quite new to CD.
Discusses Fritz Müller’s paper on the mutual protection of certain mimics ["Ituna and Thyridita", Trans. R. Entomol. Soc. Lond. (1879): xx–xxviii]. [Thyridia!?]
Shares RM’s misgivings about Fritz Müller’s mutually protecting mimics. Would expect bird’s response to distasteful caterpillars to be instinctive. Believes J. J. Weir or Thomas Belt may have investigated the point.
Sends subscription form for English edition of Weismann’s Studien.
