Astronomer Royal and his wife are visiting the Lubbocks on Saturday; will JH join them for Saturday and Sunday? Will collect him if he likes. Louisa Herschel was the belle of the Bromley Ball.
Office of Chief Medalist was abolished on 1 Dec. 1853. [LW]'s salary from then until 31 Mar. 1854 was drawn from Mint under title of 'Medalist and Engraver.' After 1 Apr. 1854, that salary will be issued by Paymaster General.
Asks HD to recommend a young man to fill a vacancy at junior clerk, and who can do assaying as well. JH provides details about the position.
Comments on JH's health, daughter Margaret Louisa's trip to John William Lubbock's, and on the Preston Strike.
