The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Agrees to serve on and hopes will be able to attend meeting of Wintringham Bequest Committee. Comments on interpretation of will. P.S. stresses keeping to the time period specified in the will.
Has had a letter from Miss Mathilde Oersted, who was gratified by JH's speech regarding her father. Her father's sudden death has been a great blow to her. Does not know what will happen to H. C. Oersted's books.
Call on RG Thursday to discuss Benedetto Pistrucci.
Hopes daughter Maria is better. Arrangements for Ball. Family finances: lists income and expenses at Collingwood and London residence. Describes carriage JH wants to buy. Ugly accident at [wedding?]; warns MH to avoid borrowing carriages. Anticipating six months of intense work following departure of H. D. Harness, after which JH intends to resign from Mint. Describes life as 'unendurable.' Misses children.
Asks JH to look at a letter by John Forbes Watson, whose paper the R.S.L. recently refused to read.
Forwards confidential memorandum by George Arbuthnot concerning JH's letter. Will discuss this with JH tomorrow.
Must meet Lord Charles [?] this morning. Cannot join [?] and C. E. Trevelyan at Downing Street. Will try to see Charles Fremantle today.
Prefers to send entire £50,000 to Cape in gold coins. Will authorize JH next week to obtain another £20,000 in gold coin from Bank [of England] for other shipments.
Forwards a letter to JH from Thomas Maclear, and FB comments on several accidents that have occurred at the Cape.
Regarding the absence of his own name from the candidates list for the R.S.L.; thinks there is a clique working against him.
Illness has prevented an earlier reply thanking him for his introduction to the Governor of Malta. Expects good results in Malta.
Daughters Caroline and Isabella left London yesterday. J. M. Cameron will pick up Julia today. JH stays late at Mint each night, leaving 'Miss R' [Rennie?] at home alone. Mr. Bulstrode agreed to let JH rent residence from month to month.
Hopes JH can attend meeting of committee on Wintringham Bequest.
Cambridge University Commissioners met today, made progress on issue of Fellowships, and saw copy of [Bessed?] Commission report. Hopes JH can attend tomorrow.
No assays today. Notified Mint staff that tomorrow is holiday for Queen's birthday.
Annibal de Gasparis's new planet Psyche. Alexander von Humboldt selected its name. Other new planet, found by [C. Robert] Luther, was named Thetis by F. W. A. Argelander. Detected new nebula on 26 Apr. Nervous trouble interrupting Hind's search for planets.
Inform CT of present pay scale for workmen in Coining and Melting departments. JH was correct in giving assistance and information to two French visitors. Wants to discuss F. R. Brande and Henry Finch.
Suggests that JH assist William Lassell's travels to Malta by asking for a letter of introduction from the Duke of Northumberland; is concerned about the precarious position of the observatory at Altona, and of the Astronomische Nachrichten published there.
