Regarding the double star Gamma Virginis.
Regarding the double star Gamma Virginis.
Comments concerning Francis Baily's book on John Flamsteed.
Thanks TM for the right ascension reductions. Saw the comet [Halley's] last night, but it was dimmer than before.
Has compared TM's observational measurements with those of the Brisbane catalogue, and finds TM's observations to be better; is working on a star photometer.
JH's observations of the comet [Halley's], together with comments on constellation nomenclature and stellar magnitudes.
Calculates the location of [Halley's] comet.
Is too busy to use Carl Gauss's magnetometer. Viewing Halley's Comet has interrupted JH's sweeps. Reports that Gamma Virginis is a single star in both the 20-ft. reflector and 7-ft. equatorial.
Star within 20 seconds of the nucleus of the comet [Halley's].
Has installed his astrometer to help judge star magnitudes; also makes a comparison of barometric observations with those of TM.
Sending some equipment back and forth, and some astrometer readings.
Following up on an earlier communication, JH expresses to CG (Lord Glenelg) his views on a variety of areas, e.g., curriculum, discipline, administration, and methods of teaching for the Government Free Schools at the Cape of Good Hope.
Arranges to have tea with TM tomorrow at the Royal Observatory.
Sends observations of several more standard stars, and of the comet.
Advice on how best to survive business world of Canton. [Letter continues from Hout Bay:] Family finances. [Letter continues 9 May at Feldhausen:] Asks help in developing JH's 'Phonetic Alphabet' of Chinese language. Considers writing book for Chinese. Comments on Chinese literature and culture. JH has changed shipping agents in Cape Town. Poem by JH.
About observations of Halley's Comet. [In postscript dated 1836-5-3], describes further observations of the comet.
Asks TM to accompany himself and Daniel Cloetes in hunting a leopard.
Does not want to compute precessions for each individual star.
Thanks WS for having accepted his medal from R.A.S. Finds that the [Thomas] Brisbane Catalogue contains insufficient right ascension information, complicating reduction observations. Observed Halley's Comet.
Thanks TM for restoring JH's micrometer.
Comments on financial arrangements for John [Stewart] together with other business matters, and asks for an estimate for printing the results of JH's Cape observations.
