The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Treasury commissioners have approved reform plan for Mint. First step will be to terminate contract with company of Moneyers. Other reforms can be delayed. Make necessary preparations for Mint staff to take over those duties.
Calls meeting for Friday of JH, H. D. Harness, the Moneyers, and [G. F. G. Mathison].
As directed by Charles Wood, HH gave formal notice [of contract termination] to Moneyers and sent Wood's letter to G. F. G. Mathison. Forwarded JH's note to Henry Bingley.
JG's health. Rejoices that JH and family are residing at Harley Street. Doubts that Alfred Smee's 'reasoning machine' is any more attractive than was Smee's electro-biology. Results of recent tests for magnetic power in human body. Insufficient data to answer question of gold standard. JG's groom was injured in accident.

Encloses copy of 5 Feb. 1851 letter from C. E. Trevelyan containing Treasury approval for 'part of' Mint reforms recommended by R. L. Sheil and JH. Treasury solicitors will serve notice of termination to Moneyers. HH sees difficulties if proposed changes are not all adopted simultaneously.
JH was elected member of Literary Society last night. Identifies other members. Invites JH and wife to dinner next Saturday.
Expresses deep appreciation for JG's loan of £500 to JH in difficult period. Sorry to hear of JG's suffering.
