The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Stating he has approached certain Government officials in order to obtain a pension for John Hind.
JH cannot give definite date for HB's termination in Assay Office. This will be delayed for as long as gold is being imported for coinage.
Will have some power punches made. Gives Mr. Hodges's notes on JH's points. Very busy at the moment with the exhibition.
Encourages GA to write a letter in support of time off for John Hind.
Note to accompany return of printed text [see GA's 1851-3-31], with one annotation enclosed.
Needs clarification of JH's annotation [see JH's 1851-4-2].
Encloses draft of proposed letter to Treasury.
Encloses official response by EE to offer from Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood]. Asks JH to see that memorial from EE [and Robert Rintoul] is read by [Henry Rich].
Responds, clearing up the misunderstood instruction [see GA's 1851-4-3].
Forwards letter from Edward Enfield, who feels that Enfield's compensation as terminated Moneyer should not be diminished for declining offer of position in new Mint establishment.
Received EE's letters [see EE's 1851-4-4] and will forward these to Henry Rich.
Sends proposals for HR's approval. Encloses excerpt from Edward Enfield's letter concerning salary raise.
If RR still wishes, RR may now submit individual claim for compensation to JH and Henry Rich for consideration.
[Extract] Appeals [to R.S.L.] for financial support to J. R. Hind, whose health is failing. Encloses letter and sketch from Hind, certificate for Dr. Hall, and letter from Richard Sheepshanks.
Unhappy with matters at the Mint; JH talks about the activities of the children, and about his involvement with the Great Exhibition. [Most of the letter written on 1851-4-7.]
Will take JH's memorandum to Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] for consideration.
Landed estates held in common by Company of Moneyers may affect their claims to compensation.
Would JH forward the enclosed letter to [J. R.?] Hind as he cannot find Hind's address.
Treasury commissioners will not make exception in case of Edward Enfield, who must accept position in reformed Mint or lose compensation for termination of Moneyers' contract.
No doubt he is aware of F. A. Nobert's work on glass. Has received from him a paper, which he intends communicating to the R.S.L. Thinks JH may like to see it.
