The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Will instruct Smith, Elder & Co. to provide a presentation copy of JH's Cape Results to Queen's College, Belfast. What has happened with JH's recommendation about Thomas Maclear's son [see JH's 1852-6-11]?
Thinks that a note must have miscarried as he is sure he informed him that the Admiralty had appointed Thomas Maclear's son [George Maclear] an assistant at the Cape and his other son [John Maclear] to a ship.
Per JH's directions, sent copies [of JH's Cape Results] to Queen's College, Belfast. Awaiting JH's instructions for dispatching few remaining presentation copies to institutions abroad.
Interested in RM's statements on various subjects, including gold diggings and the 'declension of California Produce.'[?]
Approves of G. W. H. Maclear's appointment at Cape Observatory [Second Assistant]. JH's family will welcome G. W. H. Maclear to Collingwood during his England visit.
Surprised over the uproar caused by 'malcontents' at Mint. Advises JH not to concede anything. Ask Treasury for verbal authority for each step JH takes in hiring, dismissing, or paying employees. If JH needs help, HH will return immediately. P.S.: Learned that F. R. Brande is on salary now.
JH made clear on 13 Mar. that HF's position in reorganized Mint would be that of newly entering junior clerk and that F. R. Brande's position warranted more seniority.
