The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

In JH's report on state of Crimean Medal to Lord Panmure [Fox Maule], be aware that Benjamin Wyon may not have working dies ready when promised.

Policy on adding alloy to gold coins. Reviews JH's instructions for WB during JH's absence. Hopes JH will heal. Should WB hunt up G. Baillie again regarding Ceylon coinage?
Will produce 6,000 Crimean medals each week, as soon as Benjamin Wyon provides reverse dies.
Mint debt is too great. If G. Baillie cannot liquidate soon, inform Treasury about Mint's shortage of cash. Instructions regarding reports and duties that must be completed before end of March.
Directs JH to call on Lord Palmerston [H. J. Temple] tomorrow.
Bank of England will begin importing gold again next week. Asks permission to be relieved of attending the pyx, in order to assay gold ingots. W. H. Barton will still have assistance of E. L. J. Ridsdale. Notes £600 savings made by HF in Assay department.
E. L. J. Ridsdale is qualified for Assay office and will return on probation. Production [of Crimean medal]. Distribution of copper coins. Hopes JH's health is improving.
Approves delegating E. L. J. Ridsdale to represent [WB] in 'attending the Pyx' during assay process. Does not approve of transferring Ridsdale before his probationary year as assayer is completed.
New details of gold shipment to Australia aboard vessel Hannibal. Will order more copper from Hays & Son for use as gold alloy at Sydney branch mint.
Hopes to hear how he is progressing. Looks as though he wanted rest and air. Sends a theorem for his consideration.
Estimates cost of producing a single [Crimean] medal at 35 shillings. Die Department now working 13 hours daily on medal.
Must know soon if LW's wax model for Kaffir medal has been approved.

HF's proposal for new position of assistant resident assayer deviates from procedures for reorganized Mint by avoiding usual course of promotion. Use services of E. L. J. Ridsdale instead. If Ridsdale is incompetent, he must be notified that his probation year is unsatisfactory.
