The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Accepts invitation to Norwich. For Geological Instructions, JH will wait to hear from [George Eden,] Lord Auckland. If necessary, he will consult [Charles] Darwin regarding the Instructions.
[S. J. A. Compton,] Lord Northampton will resign as president of R.S.L. ES discusses proposed changes in office of president, and asks JH to consider taking the office under the newly proposed changes.
Informs ES [President of the Royal College of Surgeons] that JH is unable to attend the Hunterian Oration and the dinner.
Regrets to hear of retirement of Spencer Compton (Marquis of Northampton) from R.S.L. presidency. Is grateful that ES and others wish him to hold office temporarily, but regards it as 'impossible.'
The memoir of JH's aunt is forthcoming. Comments on old and new style in calendars.
Some comments about dates related to JH's aunt Caroline Herschel.
About legal matters related to the death of Aunt Caroline, as well as identifying friends and dignitaries who paid their respects. Deals with bills to be paid, and with the question of a memorial tablet in the church.
Sends own article on magnetic surveys at sea. Requests comments. Discusses foreign distribution of star catalogues approved by the council and election of foreign members of R.S.L.
Responds to a number of JH's concerns about buildings, instruments and printing at the Royal Observatory [see JH's 1848-1-22 & 1847-12-30].

Further regarding the distribution of the J. J. F. Lalande catalogue.
Waited for legal documents from L. Kirchoff before responding to AK's letter announcing death of JH's aunt Caroline. Named AK's son Adolph as JH's attorney. Authorizes disposition of CLH's papers and possessions. Approves tombstone inscription by Mr. Müller. Donates portrait of William Herschel to Mrs. Groskopff.
Encloses article for JH to work on. Can he inform him of Encke's Christian names?
Is sorry to hear that they are not to have the services of Adam Sedgwick. Would be pleased if JH would write to C. R. Darwin. Thinks that 200 pages will be quite long enough for the Admiralty Manual.
Caroline Herschel's death and funeral. Awaiting JH's instructions for disposition of property and headstone inscription. Erroneous biographies appearing in French and German papers. Encloses copy of response from Mr. Hahn, bookseller, to manuscript by Margaret Louisa Herschel. [P.S., 3 Feb. 1848] Accidentally burned JH's Latin inscription for Caroline Herschel. Does JH have copy?
The paragraph he sent JH was not intended for his address. Augustus De Morgan must be under some misapprehension. Has asked De Morgan to send JH the revised form.
Has received a letter from W. C. Bond of the Cambridge Observatory (U.S.A.), who speaks of the satellite of Neptune. Bond also sends details of the stars around Orion. Relates his own work on the specula of telescopes. Intends to submit a paper on this to the R.A.S.
JH must write official letter to Admiralty stating completion of [Cape of Good Hope] telescope and explaining reason for additional £170.
Regarding spots on the sun and [T. J.?] Hussey and [A.?] Dawson's observations.
JH comments on quality of Georg Merz object glasses.
