The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Went to meet Lord John Russell. JH considers [Mastership of Mint] settled, but do not speak openly of it yet. Carried out MBH's errands in London. Encloses note for daughter Louisa from Miss A. Bryant.
Cannot determine if mastership of Royal Mint will be vacant. R. L. Sheil is in Dublin. Rumors about Sheil's new appointment. Will attend Cambridge University Commission meeting today. [G. G.] Gordon congratulated JH on Mint position. JH's host, Eneas Mackintosh, suggests that JH's son John enter Addiscombe College at age 16, but JH prefers 17. Searching for house in London. P.S.: Mr. Stroud had not heard of Mrs. Jeffrey's notice. Tell JH what to wear for 'Royal presence.'
JH still in suspense about Mastership of Mint. Wants to find house for MBH in London. Describes work that faces University Committee.
Learned from H. D. Harness today that entire Mint is undergoing reorganization. JH expects to devote considerable time to this transition. Admires Harness's capability. Read report yesterday by commission to reform Mint. Will see Lord John Russell tomorrow about Mastership of Mint.
Government allowance for JH's residence [in London] is sufficient. Will make necessary arrangements for housing while awaiting official notice to assume Mastership of Mint.
Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] confirmed JH's appointment as Master of Mint today. R. L. Sheil will resign on 1 Dec. JH will be installed on 3 Dec. as first non-political appointee.
Has accepted the offer of the Mastership of the Mint and has to find security for £20,000; can JG assist him in finding this sum as his own resources are not enough?
Please convey RS's views of changes in organization of Mint.
Requests permission to post £20,000 of JH's funds as security bond for JH's position as Master of Mint, rather than calling on JH's friends to act as surety. Will JH also need to pay 'Office Fee,' which Royal Commission of 1849 recommended be abolished?
Is grateful for JG's offer. Did not realize what he was asking. In a state of chaos at the moment due to their impending removal.
Received papers sent by WS. JH has changed addresses; no longer resides at Montague Square.
Agrees to deposit £10,000 of stock for JH's security and give JH's own bond for £10,000.
Thanks for congratulations, but JH is not yet appointed [Master of Mint]. Sorry to hear that JH inherits painful disputes. Plans to rely on WB's long experience [as superintendent of Die department].
JH's new duties at Royal Mint. JH and Margaret staying with [Elizabeth] Baily while searching for residence in London. JH's son William to be examined at Haileybury College in Jan. 1851. Son John is [attending Clapham grammar school] with Charles Pritchard.
Returns 1837 report. Expects announcement of JH's appointment soon.
Appreciates WT's letter of congratulation on JH's appointment [as Master of the Mint, to the Cambridge Commission?]. Has begun work with Cambridge.
JH's review of report to Treasury on Mint reforms.
Introducing two German scientists who have written an elaborate work on the physical geography of the Alps. Thinks they may both benefit by their knowledge of each other. Has just returned from a ramble over volcanic country.
Will be very busy learning his new job for a while, so GA should start working with other committee members; JH makes some suggestions about eclipse observation [see GA's 1850-12-14].
A note accompanying a letter that seems to come from François Arago, and that seems to JH to show a disturbed state of mind; asks GA for his opinion.
