The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

John Lubbock entitled to bring his proposal before R.A.S., and to the best advice they can give, but the idea of explaining new views on physical astronomy strikes RS as 'objectionable' in principle. No one will understand his presentation. How to proceed with this. RS's work on the standard yard.
Thanks for JH's reply about 'Towson Tables.' Please return copy of JH's letter to FB. Encloses Georg Merz's account. [Telescope] is at Custom House awaiting shipment to Cape of Good Hope. Does JH have plan and estimate yet for dome, so FB can present it to Admiralty? Received JH's 24 Oct. note about Mr. Morris's account.
John Lubbock wishes only to explain his system, so there is no reason why the R.A.S. should not listen to him. Certain conditions must be met. Troubles with the R.A.S.M.N.
Has been considering a reply to JL's letter of the 25th. Outlines two courses to take and prefers the latter himself. Communicate with Richard Sheepshanks regarding the viva voce.
Advice as to best way to present JL's method of calculating the orbits of comets to R.A.S. If JL desires R.A.S. to undertake calculations, might be some difficulty.
Error in Leonhard Euler's value for Bernoulli's 21st number. Promotes HW's method of continued subtraction as a reliable means of proving accuracy of values for higher Bernoulli numbers.
Gratitude for receipt of JH's Cape Results [transmitted via George Bancroft].
Sends Principles of Natural Philosophy from the Swedenborg Association. Published nearly one century earlier, its contents should interest JH. Contains a nebular theory commonly attributed to [P. S.] Laplace.
Invites AS to Collingwood for Christmas. The Somervilles and the Adamses will also be present.
Has been reading as far as page 36 of the proofs with great pleasure. Regarding choice of words for a phrase. Richard Jones is uninfluenced as yet.
Now commanding the Herefordshire. All navigators must prove their competency. Asks JH for such a certificate.
Congratulations on finishing his paper. Would he check over the proofs. Richard Jones is well, though not well enough to attend at the College chapel. J. E. D. Bethune and John Lefevre are staying with Jones. Bethune starts for India in February.
Destroy all HW's letters claiming errors in Leonhard Euler's values for Bernoulli's numbers. Mr. Hensley of Trinity College found weakness in HW's continued subtraction method. Clarifies symbols HW used to represent P. S. Laplace's expressions of Bernoulli's numbers.
Continues explicating P. S. Laplace's formula for determining Bernoulli's numbers. Concerned that JH sees HW claiming too much for HW's continued subtraction method.
Thanks JH for the gift of the Cape Results, and comments on his impending move to Lausanne.
Has repaired the damage to his equatorial. Observed another of Wilhelm Struve's double stars last evening. Compares some of their star readings.
Some small disagreement about the bill for the refractor [see GM's 1847-10-16].
Arrangements for JL's presentation to be made to the R.A.S.
Asks whether JL wishes to present method [see JH's 1847-12-4] at next R.A.S. meeting.
