The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Sent copies [of JH's Cape Results] to royal sovereigns in seven nations. Encloses letter from Russian ambassador, F. I. Brunnov. Agrees with JH about 'large Commission' on account for publishers Smith, Elder & Co. AP owes letter to former U.S. minister Edward Everett in Boston; will send [Cape Results] with it.
Will send Edward Everett's copy [of JH's Cape Results] to Northumberland House. Everett was elected principal of Harvard College but resigned. Returns letter from Russian ambassador, F. I. Brunnov. Now that AP has sent copies to foreign sovereigns, JH will send to their ministers those copies destined for [observatories and institutions in] their nations.
Sending last Royal copy [of JH's Cape Results] today. Edward Everett's copy goes soon. Suggests sending copy to Prof. Robinson of New York.
Delighted that JH was awarded Gold Medal by King of Holland [for Cape Results].
Congratulations on success [of JH's Cape Results], and happy new year. Encloses letter from Austrian ambassador with Emperor's testimonial to JH. Exchanged private notes with Count Jarnac regarding French king's intention to reward JH. Hopes that British government will permit JH to accept special honor from Louis Phillipe.
