The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Elated to learn from JH that JH has the remaining proofs of JH's preface to N. L. Lacaille's Catalogue of 9766 Stars in the Southern Hemisphere, as WS had believed; he also is thrilled that Richard Sheepshanks, who asserted that WS held the proofs, will now have to eat his words!
Has supplied Richard Sheepshanks with revisions of J. J. L. Lalande's Catalogue of Those Stars in the Histoire céleste française.... Because Sheepshanks previously accused WS of misplacing the proofs of JH's preface to N. L. Lacaille's Catalogue of 9766 Stars in the Southern Hemisphere (which later were found to be where WS had asserted), WS quips that he 'returned every scrap of paper' to Sheepshanks.
Has just read W. R. Dawes's description of the observatory at Camden Lodge and the telescope by eorg Merz makes TM envious. Hopes JH will press claims for one for the Cape. Is at present engaged sinking the Sector for shelter. TM has suffered much from the effects of the heat. Dr. Gall has died, aged 98. What a drubbing G. B. Airy has given R. H. Inglis.

JH's servant died in accident yesterday. Encloses papers addressed to AP but intended for [Count Jarnac?]. Suggests how to obtain help from [H. J. Temple] Lord Palmerston without appearing to violate rules. [G. H. Gordon] Lord Aberdeen shows no interest. Purpose of JH's 'memorial' to Lord John Russell was to obtain pension for Thomas Maclear.
Asks JH to compare the stars in Thomas Henderson's reductions to those in N. L. Lacaille's Coelum australe stelliferum.
Sorry he did not see JH in London. Hopes JH will support John Lefevre for a position at the University.

Regarding the physical features of the moon.
JH's opinions regarding agreement between R.S.L. and Hudson Bay Company for survey of northern Canada. Transportation expenses should be paid by Company, officer's salary by Ordnance department, but R.S.L. may choose to bear costs in order to avoid dishonoring science. Reviews magnetic data obtained by survey.
Requests permission to include JH on list of '[Five?]' presidents of hospital.
Reports on the changes to be made to the British Museum heating system to improve heating and ventilation in the manuscripts department.

In explanation of [15:399] reminds JH of all he wrote for Astronomische Nachrichten previously. Cannot attend B.A.A.S. meeting because of daughter's wedding, but would have declined anyway because of foreseen arguments over the merits of J. C. Adams and U. J. J. Leverrier. Thanks JH for standing invitation to visit England.
