The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Glad to have seen Lady Herschel and children. Is recovering slowly. Thanks JH for interest in [Francis] Ronalds's work. Discusses paper ES has submitted for R.S.P.T.
Discusses shipping some of JH's books, with a shipment of other books for the Royal Society, to the R.S.L. in order to save shipping charges.
Glad JH received gelatine paper. Discusses magnetic experiments at Toronto and Hobarton. Discusses R.S.L. committees and preparation of instruments for Arctic expedition.
Hypothesizes that annual variation of Dip and Total Force at Toronto may be caused by greater proximity of earth and sun. Discusses annual variations.
Thanks to [Francis] Ronalds for supply of paper. Comments on ES's discovery about direction of change in earth's magnetism, relating it to sun's and other electric currents. In this light, discusses auroras. Mentions abolishing of R.S.L. scientific committees and possible successor to John Caldecott.
Thanks Mrs. Sabine for translation of third volume of Alexander von Humboldt's Kosmos. Admires its author. Questions references in notes. Discusses meeting for Wintringham Committee.
Mentions cirrus cloud formations foreshadowing aurora. Is unable to attend R.S.L. committee meetings and concerned that 'outlying' members be able to relay opinions through letters.
Proposes date for next and perhaps final R.S.L. government grant committee meeting. Wishes there were more funding. Predicts results of meeting. Updates on ES's health.
Cannot attend meeting of grant committee tomorrow. Favors grant to print observations made at Armagh Observatory by T. R. Robinson, but with conditions. Protests any grants to public institutions. Mr. Forbes's proposition is too premature to act on it.
Encloses letters pertaining to committee decision, proposed by G. B. Airy and regarding which JH wrote a letter, to grant aid to Armagh Observations.
Received series of actinometer observations from [Joseph] Dayman aboard Rattlesnake. JH's trip to Continent. Completion of Francis Ronalds's magnetographs. Improved access to Kew Observatory by railway. Next committee meeting. Bakerian lecture by Michael Faraday.
Wants advice regarding recalculation of magnetic lines using [C. F.] Gauss's method and new numerical data. This will be a provisional calculation.
Cannot offer advice regarding geo-magnetism. Suggests ES ask [C. F.] Gauss for assistance.
Saw [J. B.] Listing, who may see JH soon. Sends volume of Cape magnetic observations. Thermometer at Kew is a great success. New thermometers compare favorably with [Henri] Regnault's.
Read JH's Admiralty Manual meteorology article. Disagrees with statement regarding barometer and pressure of dry atmosphere. Discusses atmosphere and barometer at some length.
Remarks on a correction in manual regarding some fluctuation of heating and cooling.
Disagreement with W. H. Sykes over whether to publish observations by General [Cullen?] that Sykes claims have never been reviewed or read [to R.S.L.]. Encloses copy of JH's reply to Sykes.
Suggests postponing meeting of Wintringham Bequest Committee. Will bring up [Edward] Cooper's letter about comet memoir at next council meeting. Has worked out cost reductions for printing of R.S.P.T.
Discusses regulations of bequest, which will benefit chemistry and physics. Discusses relationship between solar spot period and magnetic disturbances. Wants JH's comments on paper regarding this topic.
Believes similarity of period of solar spots and that of terrestrial magnetic variation is more than coincidental.
