The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Informs JH that the committee to deal with the publication of Fauna Antiqua Sivalensis has been struck and is to prepare a request to the government for aid in publishing.
Arrangements made for copies of the B.A.A.S. Catalogue of Stars to be distributed to public institutions and to individuals.
B.A.A.S. resolutions include closing H.E.I.C. magnetic and meteorological observatories at Simla and Singapore but continuing those in Bombay and Madras. Propose magnetic survey of India Sea.
The Moon map arrived safely on Saturday. Is pleased it was of some use. Includes J. R. Hind's corrections for double star Alpha Virginis. Will forward later ones.
Sends an analysis of the salts he sent him at Cambridge.
As president of B.A.A.S., JH forwards annual resolutions for prime minister's review. Especially requests continuing support for magnetic observations.
Encloses resolutions and report for Sir Robert Peel for JH's signature. Other information to follow.
Reduction of observations will begin immediately.
[Roderick] Murchison, [John] Phillips, and ES will take care of present business. Will not convene B.A.A.S. council until autumn.
Is gratified by the mention of JM's name in JH's B.A.A.S. address, but thinks that JH has made a grave error in his castigation of the work of Auguste Comte. Comments on his theories.
Sends copy of B.A.A.S. resolutions to fellows of Trinity College, Dublin, containing recommendation to continue magnetic and meteorological observatory there.
Informs of B.A.A.S. proposal to encourage by 'specific pecuniary reward,' improvement of 'self-recording magnetical and meteorological apparatus.' Outlines advantages of proposal.
Is grateful for JH's note and the manuscript. Will treasure it. Sails on 4 Sept. Has heard who his successor will be. Would be very pleased to assist JH in any way when he returns to America.
Comments on JH's disagreement with the nebular hypothesis of Auguste Comte, and points out to JM that JH disagrees with some of JM's writings on physical science as well.
Sends new edition of JF's Travels [through the Alps of Savoy]. Hopes JH will examine the theoretical part.
Is sending to Auguste Comte JH's Athenaeum comments on Comte. Asks JM not to mention that JH sent them to JM. Does not wish to offend Comte.
