The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

On the origin of the R.A.S.
Extent of WH's manuscript for JH's Admiralty Manual is fine. Please send it as soon as possible.
Describes R.S.L. Council meeting regarding succession of presidency. Most members wish to nominate JH to serve for a few years. ES urges JH to accept. [Marked 'private.']
Has written a letter to Mrs. James Maclaren and enclosed three orders of admission to the British Museum.
Is off to Scotland and has not been able to collect the parcel. News of the Cape. Dr. J. R. Innes's letters. Is sorry to hear of Lady Herschel's slow recovery.
Returns Robert Peel's letter. JH has not changed opinion. Will not accept office [of R.S.L. president], even for one year.
Unable to chair the [R.A.S.] meeting on Friday. On various persons proposed as R.A.S. associates or honorary members. Has recently been busy reading newspapers: 'There seem to be 2 worlds going on at once and it is not easy to keep up with both.'
Thanks WS for W. H. Wollaston's crystal models and other gifts. Comments on the 'strange and exciting events' that are in progress in political affairs.
Sending a Latin poem he has written on the death of Caroline Herschel. Comments on the troubled state [Revolution of 1848] of Paris at the time.
Asks when JH can receive CL and Edward Sabine at Collingwood, that they may explain to JH why R.S.L. Council desires JH to serve as president.
Discusses ES's visit with Charles Lyell to try inducing JH to accept nomination for R.S.L. presidency. In light of JH's earlier letter, ES did not propose JH as nominee, but others regard JH's nomination as exceedingly important.
The [British Museum] board accepts, with regret, JH's resignation as a Trustee.
Asked [Charles Lyell] to communicate JH's response to ES.
'Confidential' Insists that CL honor JH's decision regarding R.S.L. office and drop subject.
Begs CL and Edward Sabine to cancel their plan to interview JH for office [Presidency] in R.S.L. To continue will cause JH 'inexpressible pain.'
