The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Assures HB that transitional state of Assay department will soon be replaced by more permanent conditions.
Acknowledges JH's plan to change office of resident assayer.
Requests additional time to study JH's offer to HB of new position in reorganized Mint.
Withdraws HB's letter of 30 Sept. [1850] regarding Assay department, as JH requested.
Needs explanation of plan [to abolish Assay Office]. Define terms on which JH offers HB position as non-resident assayer.
Has considered JH's proposal [of new position in reorganized Mint] and encloses HB's official answer.
Changes offer that JH made to HB in note to H. D. Harness.
JH cannot give definite date for HB's termination in Assay Office. This will be delayed for as long as gold is being imported for coinage.
Accepts JH's decision to abolish Assay Office. Will not compress HB's response to this 'distressing and anxious subject.'
Will rewrite HB's claim to Treasury as JH recommended.
Regrets abolition of Assay office. Will transmit to Treasury HB's letter claiming compensation, but JH feels HB should provide more precise information. HB misunderstood purpose of JH's letter.
Claims greater compensation from Treasury for loss of earnings, residence, and future employment of HB's son, due to abolition of office of Queen's assay master, held by HB's family for more than 100 years. Considers earlier offers of compensation unacceptable.
HB's memorial, detailing effect on HB and son of JH's plan to abolish Assay Office, should be sent to Treasury.
JH forwarded HB's claim for compensation to Treasury.
There are no records comparing private and official assays performed at Mint. History of coach house and stable now in HB's possession.
Urges JH to obtain HB's retirement allowance and compensation quickly.
Unable to vacate Assay Office and HB's residence by dates that JH set. Requires extension. Still has not seen terms, in writing, of HB's retirement from Mint.
Office of Queen's Assayer will terminate 18 Aug. HB must vacate his house by 13 Oct. JH cannot extend HB's occupancy to Christmas.
What steps has JH taken regarding [HB's claim for compensation] for HB's son?
Has JH heard from C. E. Trevelyan regarding claim by HB's son for compensation? If not, HB asks JH to compensate HB's son for one and a half years of unpaid services at Mint.
