The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Some comments on observations by Continental observers; matters related to sending books and papers.
Vol. 6 and 7 of F. W. Bessel's observations. Did DB receive JH's paper?
Letter to [Edinburgh Philosophical] Journal calling attention to 1809 article by [Paul] Erman of Berlin, which some say anticipated JH's 1824 Bakerian lecture on 'Motions produced in fluid conductors when transmitting the Electric current.' JH compares both papers, admits Erman's priority on some theoretical points but claims originality for JH's experiments.
JH's theory of colors. Edward Troughton has DB's instrument one-third completed. When will DB want JH's encyclopedia article on 'Variation'?
Praises old Edinburgh Philosophical Journal. Promises to send DB some materials for publication.
Has received copies of reprints from Lyell. Points out errors in a printed paper of his. Has been unwell and very busy of late. Would like to add DB's name to the Optical Glass Committee.
Asks DB to sign a certificate for the candidature of William Ritchie for admission to R.S.L.
Sending DB a draft of a paper; comments on quality of a chromatic lens (that of [Charles] Tulley's telescope using Pierre Guinand's glass).
Having now learned that the offensive article in the Edinburgh Review was by DB [see DB's 1831-12-1], JH writes in surprise that DB could have written what he did, and requests that JH's letter [see JH's 1831-11-25] be returned unpublished. JH will decide how to proceed.
Is pleased with Mr. Johnston's reply. Regarding a figure used by JH in his paper and its true significance. Is not certain yet whether to join the B.A.A.S.
Excusing JH for returning to Slough suddenly before leaving for Hanover.
Regarding DB's views on support for JH in the presidency of the R.S.L.
Asks DB to write a paragraph explaining the novelty of the photographic process of '[Andrew?] Ross and [Thomas?] Thomson' as distinct from [Nicéphore] Niépce's albuminous process.
Thanks for his letter regarding the dioptric lights. Gives his own views as to their importance.
