The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

As part of a discussion about decimal coinage, JH states that an early issue of florins is contemplated.
Must meet Lord Charles [?] this morning. Cannot join [?] and C. E. Trevelyan at Downing Street. Will try to see Charles Fremantle today.
If enclosed report meets [?]'s approval, please show it to Chancellor of Exchequer. Parts of it should not be seen by JH's subordinates.
A note accompanying a repayment of expenses incurred on behalf of some of JH's children.
Cannot accede to the request for a visit to the Mint at this time. JH thanks for the cards of exchange rates with other currencies, and offers a suggestion for an improvement in them.
Arranges to meet [?] at JH's residence tomorrow to discuss business.
Measures indicated in annexed document are absolutely necessary in present circumstances.
Embarrassed that JH's servant sent away messenger who brought papers for JH's signature. Does not consider Mint to be bound by Ralph Heaton's terms for copper coinage. JH prefers contract with Heaton similar to former contract with Boulton & Watt. Dies should be supplied by Mint, not made by contractor.
Suggests regulations regarding bullion. Resolution of [Treasury] commissioners was forwarded to Sir Charles Wood.
Regrets will be unable to be steward at a 'Public dinner.'
In response to a request for information, JH says that his father, William, never had a residence in London.
C. E. Trevelyan reports that W. E. Gladstone agreed to 'subject of our conversation yesterday.' Does [?] still want to meet with JH at Treasury chambers today?
Refers to [James] Wilson's letter of 18 Nov. Queen must proclaim certain coins to be legal tender in colonies before Mint may issue them.
Progress of production on [?] medal, with ribbons and clasp, by [Heat & Roskell], jewellers.
Outlines administrative organization, duties, and jurisdiction of Sydney branch mint. Procedure for sending sample coins to London for examination and approval.
Forwards letter by E. W. Ward reporting progress at Sydney branch mint and assay results of Australian gold.
Analysis of quantities of coins in circulation. Explains ways in which gold and silver are diverted from coins to other purposes.
Specifies procedure for combining the contents of two pots.
Returns [?]'s letter, dated January, for correction. Believes that [?] intended it to be dated February.
