Summary:

Has sent parcels for Smith and Sir Joseph Banks with Professor [Jöns Jacob] Berzelius, [(1779-1848)], chemist, who is coming to England. Smith's parcel contains: third volume of "Flora Ind. occidentalis"; "transactions" of the Royal Academy of Sciences from 1809 to 1811; his "Synopsis filicum" for either [William Jackson] Hooker or Smith; and six volumes of "Swedish Botany", a gift of the Academy to the Linnean Society. Hopes Hooker received the letter he sent before he left Europe [abandoned plans for travelling to Ceylon with Sir Robert Brownrigg]. Curious to know how far [Robert] Brown's "Prodromus florae Novae Hollandiae" has advanced, hopes to establish an exchange with him. Swedish Academy of Sciences, of which he is now the secretary, is keen to have full set of "Linnean Transactions" and the second part of Brown's "Flora". [Erik] Acharius has published his "Lichenographia universalis" and has still not received any thanks for the collection he sent to the Linnean Society.

[Georg] Wahlenberg's recently published "Flora Lapponica" has doubled the number of plants described in Linnaeus' "Flora Lapponica", it includes 30 plates and a large botanico-geographical map. [Alexander von] Humboldt, von Bruhl and W have proceeded on similar principals and plans for their own works. Asks after progress of "Flora Graeca", "English Botany", and [Dawson] Turner's "Historia fucorum".

Summary:

Received Smith's letter of 17 and 26 April [1813], hopes Smith received the letter he forwarded from Professor Sprengel at Halle. News of [Erik] Acharius: pleased by his admittance to Linnean Society and is anxious to receive "Linnean Transactions" and his diploma; planning to send further specimens to add to the "the expedition"collection he previously sent; hopes Smith will wait for publication of his "Synopsis methodica Lichenum" before Smith finishes that part of ["English Botany"]. Swedish Academy [of Sciences] agrees to a "transactions" exchange with the Linnean Society. Pleased that the 6 volumes of "Svensk Botany" have arrived. Relieved to to hear of Sir Joseph Banks' recovery as he had previously been told he was already dead. Asks to be remembered to [Robert] Brown, [Dawson] Turner, and [William Jackson] Hooker.

Summary:

[Swartz writes, in English] Received Smith's letter of 19 June. Thanks for the article intended for the supplement to "Edinburgh Encyclopedia", and the new edition of "Compendium florae Britannicae", intends publishing a much needed similar work on Scandinavian plants. Longs to see botanical part of [Abraham] Rees' "Cyclopedia". Pained to hear of valetudinarian state of Sir Joseph Banks. Has sent the most recent "transactions" of Swedish Academy [of Sciences]. Praises work and talents of [William Jackson] Hooker. Impatiently awaiting sequel of Robert Brown's "Prodromus".

[Acharius writes, in Latin] He has waited a long time for a letter from Smith. Staying with Swartz. Asks after a letter and rare lichen he sent Smith a few years ago via Mr Ekenstam, and monographs on 'Glyphis' and 'Chiodecton', with illustrations, for "Linnean Transactions". Requests copy of [Dawson] Turner and [William] Borrer's "Lichenographia britannica" as soon as it appears, as he is preparing a "Philosophia lichenologica".
