Grateful for receipt of JH's Cape Results.
Has received JH's volume and letter from Algernon Percy (4th Duke of Northumberland). Regards it as a valuable contribution to his library. Would like JH's opinion on the papers of Benjamin Peirce and his views on the planet Neptune.
Responding to GG’s offer to aid CD’s natural history researches on New Zealand, CD suggests that limestone caverns should be examined for fossils and that observations on the presence and range of erratic boulders in New Zealand would be very valuable.
Grateful for receipt of JH's Cape Results. Was aesthetically inspired by JH's descriptions and drawings.

Asks GA for details about the scientific support provided by Hugh Percy; also asks about the availability of star charts on the Berlin Academy scheme.
Replies to JH's 1847-11-14, with respect to Hugh Percy and star charts.
[Received JH's 12 Nov. letter.] Send bill for Munich telescope to Admiralty. Order parts for dome construction, which [Thomas] Maclear cannot procure at Cape [of Good Hope].
Is still working on the distribution list for star catalogues [see GA's 1846-11-19].
Believes that Thomas Galloway's paper on solar motion deserves a medal.
Believes that if R.S.L. gives medals that year, J. R. Hind should receive one. John Lubbock is another possible candidate for his work on perturbation theory.
JDH writes from Lisbon regarding his journey, letter sent with one to Miss Henslow. Anticipates good passage as far as Sidon but plans after reaching Egypt are uncertain, he will stay close to G.G. [Governor General]. Discusses how grandfather has invested JDH's money & how to draw money from W. & T.[?] after arrival in Calcutta [Kolkata]. Letter arrived at Portsmouth containing letters of introduction for JDH in Calcutta. Suggests Miss Cracroft would be liked by his family & should visit Kew & wants to know what friends of hers he should visit in India. Mother to forward this information through Mrs Kendal. Reports on progress with V.D.L. [van Diemen's Land] plants to be sent home by Dr Salmon, not Miller, along with the with the Niger m/s [manuscript]. Provisionally calls the new V.D.L. cruciferous plant Bretonia. This & the Fagus called ‘gunnii’ from the m/s of Gunn’s trip should be checked by Pl[anchon?] to see if names are occupied & characters drawn up. Dr Richardson to be informed what ship the plants are sent on so he can send case of bottles by the same via steamer to Barnes. JDH to write again from Gibraltar with account of Lisbon.
Advises that the catalogs [J. J. L. Lalande's Catalogue of Those Stars in the Histoire céleste française... and N. L. Lacaille's Catalogue of 9766 Stars in the Southern Hemisphere] not be bound for another five or six months because some proof-sheets are still quite wet.
Discusses persons who deserve copies of J. J. L. Lalande's Catalogue of Those Stars in the Histoire céleste française... and N. L. Lacaille's Catalogue of 9766 Stars in the Southern Hemisphere (?).
Offers his suggestions for any trimming of the catalogue distribution list that may be necessary [see JH's 1847-11-17].
Offers HM-E some specimens of Lernaea, a crustacean parasite on Balanus elongatus.
Mentions opinion of Harry Goodsir about a form CD believes to be the larva of Lernaea.
Does he mean his paper will be ready for the printer by 10 Dec.? Should be at the binders by the 19th. Political signs need watching. Richard Jones is not well. George Peacock will be home next week.
