Knows nothing of '[Salix] fissa' but from [James] Crowe and bad specimens from Edward Forster; its distinction from 'S. rubra' of "Flora Anglica". Wishes Smith would settle between Mr Francis and himself whether 'Mnium tripomanis' and 'M. fissum' Linnaeus are not the same species, and whether [James] Dickson is mistaken in calling '[Jungermannia] nemorosa' '[Jungermannia] resupinata'.

Thanks for Pulteney's letter of 12 May and "valuable" thesis. Encloses sample of Linnaeus' handwriting. "The disciples of Linnaeus ought all to be brothers, & those who have so eminently distinguished themselves in his service as you have done, ought to be particularly dear to the rest".

Invites Pulteney to become a FLS; news of the Linnean Society, including intentions, members, fees, and collections. Botanical news: 'Calycanthus praecox' in flower this winter; discovered that 'Schrebera' is only 'Myrica aethiopica' with a 'Cuscuta' on it, intends to publish this and other observations in a volume "Observationes Botanicae", but at present occupied in publishing "Icones plantarum"; Kew catalogue published in June.

Young [Joseph Franz] Jacquin staying in Britain for most of the summer. [Thomas] Marsham publishing an "Entomolgia Britannica". His herbarium now in better order than when he was at Chelsea, offers its services.

Summary:

Thanks for Smith's letter of 17 March [1789]. Explains the difficulties he has in pursuing botany: too busy with his medical practice to botanise in local area, and too far from London to study exotics, which confines his studies to books, of which he has none.

Informed by [Aylmer Bourke] Lambert of formation of the Linnean Society, thanks Smith for invitation to join and asks to pay his subscription as a sum rather than annually. Thanks for Smith's botanical information, as he no longer has a London botanical correspondent. Had hoped that [Thomas] Marsham's scheme would have "comprehended the whole Fauna", as on plan of "Fauna Suecica". Requests information on Smith's "Plantarum icones".

Signed [Josef Franz] Jacquin's Royal Society nomination certificate; offers to show Jacquin Dorset if his tour of Britain takes him west. Thanks Smith for invitation to view Linnaean collections.

Wishes to join Linnean Society. Received Smith's "[Plantarum] icones" and "Reliquiae rudbeckianae" and [Johann] Gmelin's edition of "Systema [naturae]". Asks if [William] Withering and [John] Stokes' "Botanical Arrangement" is correct to designate "the Cornish heath" as new. Asks if any copies of [Olof] Swartz's "Prodromus Plant. Amer." are available in London.

Summary:

Received Pulteney's letter of 6 October [1789]. Congratulates him on admission as FLS, rejoices "to have your name on our list as one of the main pillars of our infant undertaking", believes Pultney's and Linnaeus' names ought never to be separated. Proud that Pulteney approves of his recent publications, currently working on second fasciculus and "more splendid work with coloured figures". Studying 'Arenaria' for Linnean Society and ferns for another purpose.

'Erica didyma' of Stokes distinct from 'E. multiflora' Linnaeus. [Olof] Swartz' "Prodromus" not to be had in London. Recommends Jusseiu's "Genera Plantarum", though "not altogether Linnean". Offers to acquire L'Héritier's works for him.

Summary:

Thanks for election as FLS. Isolated from progress of botany, owing to his "out of the way" location, not having a botanical correspondent in London, and inability to buy even old botanical books. Declines Smith's offer to acquire L'Héritier's "sumptuous work" until he is sure of its extent; would like to see the treatise on 'Geranium' mentioned in "Hortus Kewensis" but assumes the "present distracted state of France " will disrupt such publications.

Sorry Pulteney has so much difficulty in getting books, offers his assistance, and to supply numbers of L'Héritier's "Stirpes novae aut minus cognitae". "All science stands still at Paris at pres[en]t". Hedwig's work on mosses. Asks after Pulteney's book currently in the press.

Anxious to procure those books quoted by Linnaeus, particularly Dalechamp and Brunssaling. He is about to publish his "Sketches of the progress of botany" [(1790)], orginally intended as an introduction to a large scale English flora.

Offers to send Gaertner and L'Héritier's latest works. Encloses list of Linnean Society members, 25 were present at their anniversary meeting. [Aylmer Bourke] Lambert likely to make "great discoveries" in Ireland.

Summary:

Uncertainty of his coming to London. Declines opportunity to purchase Gaertner but will borrow it. Pleased to hear Smith intends to publish a new edition of "Systema vegetabilium", hopes it will be followed by a "Species plantarum". Had wished to see Lamarck's French "Flora" until seeing it was gone from the catalogue and following Smith's remarks on it.

Has heard from [Aylmer Bourke] Lambert in Ireland, where he is visiting his estate in [County] Mayo, transmits contents of his letter, including natural history finds. Directions for sending L'Héritier's "Cornus".

Summary:

Praises Gaetner's book [De fructibus et seminibus plantarum (1788-1805)], but feels "somewhat repugnant" to any attempt of forming a system on his principles. Thanks for attempts of Smith and others for their praise of his book ["Sketches of the progress of botany" (1790)] but concedes it will be of interest only to curiosity of young botanists and men of general reading.

Requests remainder of L'Héritier's works as they appear in Britain though fears revolutions and politics of France will hinder the author. Requests copy of Gmelin's edition of "Systema naturae". Hopes [Aylmer Bourke] Lambert is not idle in Ireland. Surprised that [John] Lightfoot and others should have missed so many Scottish plants now published by [James] Dickson in his second fasciculus [of "Plantarum cryptogamicarum Britanniae" (1785-1801)]. Dr Patrick Browne has given Lambert a manuscript on Jamaican plants, suspects it is of little worth. Apologises for corresponding with Smith on "such unequal terms".

Summary:

Wishes he could be in London to attend auction of Paitoni's books. Pleased to hear Smith is contemplating a "Flora Anglica" and new edition of "Flora Lapponica", suggests including all the new plants discovered since publication of "Species plantarum". Astonished by the number of botanical books being published; feels so far left behind that he must give it up. Requests books by L'Héritier; asks Smith's opinion of Krocker's "Flora Siberiaca".

Requests Smith's vote for William Frazer's candidacy at the Royal Society. Asks Smith to bid on his behalf for lot 8585 at Paitoni's election, work by Ehrhet.
