Broussonet left Gibraltar a month ago, entrusting him with parcels of plants and seeds for Smith and Sir Joseph Banks, and letters of introduction to Smith. Introduces himself and requests Smith's advice for studying natural history; he was formerly a canon, but forced to flee France at the end of 1792; took refuge in Spain; has gathered good collections of plants, insects, and shells, without books or other resources. Intends to embark from London on receiving letters of recommendation from Smith and Banks.

Sending Smith parcel of plants and seeds from Gibraltar, Africa, and Portugal for Sir Joseph Banks, and a new dioecious plant called 'Thulea'. Also sending bulbs, insects collected by Broussonet, minerals, and shells.

Broussonet has requested names of plants sent. Fears Smith has not received several letters he previously sent. Broussonet has advised him to go to England. Requests Smith's assistance in establishing correspondence and exchanges with interested naturalists, including Fabricius.

Revives their correspondence with intention of offering product of his Tangier plant collecting and everything that may interest Smith in France, to which he is returning. Has not had any book on botany since he left France in 1792, excepting fourteenth edition of the Systema Naturae. Encloses catalogue of plants.

Has not forgotten Smith's offer in 1796 to send New Holland plants. Broussonet is still near the Canaries, had hoped to reach the Cape of Good Hope.

Hopes Smith received the small collection of plants from the area around Tangier he sent September [1802]. He is in Madrid to assist [Antonio José] Cavanilles and other botanists before returning to France next March, where he intends to dedicate himself to botany and natural history. Claims Smith's promise in 1796 of sending New Holland and British plants. Would like to maintain a correspondence with Smith on his return to France.
