Summary:

Thanks for admittance as Associate Member of the Linnean Society. Will send drawings he intends to make of unknown and rare insects and birds in his collections. Offers to procure pictures of Piedmont insects unknown to Linnaeus but mentioned by [Johan Christian] Fabricius and [Otto Friedrich] Muller [(1730-1784) Danish naturalist] for Smith's intended new edition of a Linnaeus work. [Baron d'Avise de Charvensod] wishes to exchange minerals with Smith. Sends compliments to [Thomas] Marsham and agrees with Smith that his work on "Entomologia Britannica" would be easier if he starts with 'Coleoptera'.

Has been unable to send promised drawings of birds and insects as preparations for the marriage of the Duke of Aoste have employed every painter in the city but shall try to send them soon. Introduces Henry Matthey of Turin who is attempting to set himself up in London, information on his family. Dr Ballardi has sent a box of plant specimens to Smith.

Summary:

Henry Matthey has written to his parents in Turin stating the cases of natural history drawings sent by Giorna have been detained by Customs due to his lack of money. Matthey's parents have asked Smith to anonymously pay the duties plus £2 for anything Matthey may need, Smith to be reimbursed from the proceeds of selling the drawings. Comments that Viller's "Entomologia Linnaeana" should have been called "Entomogia Europea Juxta Sistema Linneai" as only European insects are described. Complains that the authors of the "Collection des papillons de l'Europe" have abandoned it at the sixteenth installment.

Summary:

Thanks for the first volume of "Linnean Transactions". Henry Matthey has been working in a bank in Genoa for the last six months, his delusions of grandeur cured by squandering his patrimony in London. The fate of the pictures of birds Giorna sent him is unknown after they were claimed by an agent who advanced 20 guineas. Thanks for suggestion of [John] Latham as a correspondent. Hopes Smith has by now received the box of insects he sent via Mr Passavant, an English merchant in Turin. Forgot to send 'Kermes elegans' but was unsure on its classification. Believes [Pietro] Rossi's [(1738-1804) Italian entomologist] "Fauna Etrusca" qualifies him to become a member of the Linnean Society, asks how this could be achieved.
