Pleased with [John Blachford] who is staying with him after Smith's introducing him, teaching him botany whilst [Johann Friedrich] Blumenbach teaches him "chineralogy", hopes he will become "a Lightfoot for Ireland". Has heard from Dr Harrison that Smith is engaged in a new "Systema Vegetibilum". Shall send Smith his "Plant. Veg. Subterran." as soon as it appears. Thanks for election as FMLS.

Reply to Smith's letter of 25 June answering questions on his "Historia Salicum": at present no more than nine fascicules of it published, work will be continued and will be pleased to correspond with James Crowe and have his observations on species of English 'Salix'. Already published ninth fasciculus of his "Plantae lichen[...]" and second volume of his "Flora Germanica" which contains the mosses and fungi, will send to Smith. Professor Reich at Erlangen, Germany, has published German translation of Smith's "Tour on the Continent". Asks Smith to recommend to his friends a young man who would like to be a tutor, governor or companion to English family or man. Has not heard from [John] Blachford since he left.

Founding a Phytographical Society; list of desiderata.

Introduces Baron Ch[ristian] von Vietinghoff, who wishes to become FMLS. He has created a catalogue of the plants of the Moscow Botanic Garden; had diploma of their Moscow Society sent to Smith some time ago; planning a new edition of his "Flora Germaniae", requests most recent issues of "English botany".
