Death of [Richard] Pulteney. Plans to republish Pulteney's ["A general view of the writings of Linnaeus"] possibly using the manuscripts bequeathed to him, and to include a new biographical preface on Pulteney.

Requests information from Smith on Linnaeus' unpublished manuscripts for new edition of [Richard] Pulteney's "A general view of the writings of Linnaeus". Planning to include diary of Linnaeus and some original unpublished letters if he succeeds in purchasing them. Requests Smith's knowledge on the medical part of Linnaeus' writings.

Questions Smith on Linnaeus' published works, his acquisiton of the Linnaean collections, and progress of the Linnaean system in Britain, for new edition of [Richard] Pulteney's "A general view of the writings of Linnaeus". Intends to include a diary of Linnaeus he recently purchased. Asks if Smith is publishing "Lachesis Lapponica".

Concerned Smith's copy of his edition of [Richard] Pulteney's ["A general view of the writings of Linnaeus"] has miscarried. Remarks on the book, including his decision not to explain the Linnaean system and not to discuss the collections in depth.

Jokes that Smith is suffering from two afflictions, erysipelas and [Richard] Salisbury. Linnean Society settled in new premises [9 Gerard Street, Soho, London]. [Robert] Brown still undecided on offering himself for the new office [of Clerk, Librarian and Housekeeper]. Plants brought back by Brown [from Australia] deposited in Soho Square [home of Sir Joseph Banks]. Compliments first numbers of [Alexander von] Humboldt's "South American plants" but complains that there is no clarification of 'Cortex peruvianus' [Jesuit's Bark, remedy for malaria] in the remarks on 'Cinchona', so unable to fully advise the committee of the College of Physicians revising the London Pharmacopoeia on this. Royal Society's Copley medal awarded to [Humphry] Davy.

Working with London College of Physicians revising their Pharmacopoeia, queries botanical names with Smith: discusses different specimens of 'Melaleuca leucadendra' sent by Christopher Smith [(d 1807) East India Company botanist], from one of which cajeput oil is obtained; whether officinal juice is obtained from 'Aconitum napellus' or 'Aconitum neomontanum' of [Carl Ludwig] Willdenow; whether Smith has given a trivial name to the 'Alpinia' which yields cardamom; unsure whether the fruit of 'Laurus nobilis' is a bacca or drupa; and terminology for describing hops. Smith has annotated brief responses to each query.

Has named 'Malaleuca cajuputi'. Lack of papers at Linnean Society for reading at meetings. Smith's paper on the vitellus of seeds well regarded. Reading Smith's latest publication ["Introduction to Botany"], asks when an English "Lachesis Lapponica" is to be published.

A new paper on the Cardamom [White's 'Botanical Description and Natural History of the Malabar Cardamom'] which authorises it as a new genus. Had named it 'Garcia cardamomum' in the new edition of the London Pharmacopoeia, but [Martin] Vahl [(1749-1804)] and [Carl Ludwig] Willdenow had made prior claims on the name, asks Smith's assistance in determining a new name.

Intends to subjoin some remarks in [David] White's paper on the Malabar Cardamom explaining the name for new genus of the plant, 'Elettaria', and correcting errors in Linnaeus' 'Amomum cardamomum', describes some of them and asks Smith to examine Linnaeus' specimen. Unsure on how to proceed with publication of the note.

[Jonas] Dryander dead following an operation on a chronic abscess of the rectum and unrelated peritonitis. To be buried in St Ann's, Soho, London. Excited about printing of Linnaeus' "Lachesis Lapponica".

[Robert] Brown is to succeed [Jonas] Dryander as Sir Joseph Banks' [librarian]. Royal Society librarianship still vacant. [William Elford] Leach censured at Linnean Society for sending a circular letter against election of [William] Bullock [(fl 1790s-1840s)]; expects further unpleasantness. Hopes to see Smith's edition of "Lachesis Lapponica" soon. He is currently Lady Banks' physician.

Proposes formation of a "Linnean Club" from among the "more zealous and respectable members" of the Society, with 15 to 20 members. [Alexander] Macleay, Bishop of Carlisle [Samuel Goodenough], and [Aylmer Bourke] Lambert all approve; its intentions.

Thanks for present of game. Enquires after Smith's canvassing for Cambridge Botany Professorship. Awarded Gold Medal by the Royal Academy of Sciences of Stockholm for his edition of [Richard] Pulteney's "A general view of the writings of Linnaeus" although whereabouts of the actual medal is unknown.

Thanks for gift of partridges, which are very scarce this season. Encloses letter addressed to his friend Mr Stoddart from a French Count, recommends Smith establish a correspondence. [Aylmer Bourke] Lambert has come to London in a state of nervous irritation similar to previous complaints of his.

Introduces [John] Britton [(1771-1857), antiquarian and topographer], who is preparing a work on Norwich Cathedral and would like to consult Norwich antiquarians.

Discussed with [Alexander] Macleay and [Robert] Brown the design for the ornamented page for Prince Leopold's signature in the Linnean Society Charter-book, to also be used for other royal signatures. Process by which the Prince will sign and bye-laws. Pleased Smith has not promised his vote for new Royal Society president to anyone. Brief details of Sir Joseph Banks' will: [Robert] Brown to receive the library, museum and £200 per annum for life, to afterwards go to the British Museum, and Lady Banks given whole of the landed property for life, afterwards to be divided between Colonel Stanhope and Sir Henry Howley, Banks' closest relatives. Flattered by Smith and [William] Roscoe naming ['Matonia'] after him.

No doubt of Sir Humphry Davy's election as President of the Royal Society. Account of first Linnean Society meeting of the season, attended in "great force", though once the reading of [William Elford] Leach's entomological paper is complete there will be a lack of papers; hopes Smith will be able to supply the gap. Proposes that the Linnean Society lease Sir Joseph Banks' house on expiry of lease of their Gerrard Street rooms; [Robert] Brown is amenable. [Alexander] Macleay detained in Scotland by illness of his daughter, who has scarlet fever. Proposes that Brown's salary is raised and attached solely to his office as Librarian, with "some inferior person" replacing his duties as Clerk.

The Linnean Club met recently but they have lost William Smith's membership, and seceders to the new club have also reduced their numbers.

Return of David Douglas [(1799-1834), botanist] from America and his "great acquisition of new species of plants"; proposes that he be raised from ALS to FLS, with the usual fees waived, as recognition of his achievements. It would also compliment that Horticultural Society, the Linnean Society's "sister". The old Linnean Club "going on prosperously this season".
