Summary:

Asks after drawings of various fungi he sent Smith last winter to be engraved for further study, as illustrations to a paper he withheld from sending; if it is too late for the paper to appear in "Linnean Transactions" vol 3 requests that they be returned. Sends first part of his "Observationes mycologicae", hopes Smith welcomes it in same way he welcomed his "Dispositio methodica fungorum". Requests plants from enclosed desiderata [extant].

Summary:

Awaits receipt of Linnean Society diploma. Sends description of new fungi for possible inclusion in "Linnean Transactions". Asks for engravings of the drawings of fungi he previously sent including: 'Peziza onotica', 'Boletus cinereus', 'Boletus rubiginosus', 'Stemonitis leucostyla', 'Sphaeria ochracea', and 'Lycogala conica', [Smith has marked each with a cross], and for prints of the treatise as he is publishing his "Synopsis fungorum". Expecting packet of dried plants, requests 'Filices' and 'Lycoperdon phalloides'. Sends regards to Bracy Clark and [James] Dickson.

Smith has summarised his reply on verso of second folio: returns five of the drawings to be named; his paper shall be printed in fifth "Linnean Transactions" volume; intends to name a 'Persoonia', was beaten by [Martin] Vahl to name a 'Schraderia'; will send dried plants; requests 'Coliforme'.

Requests plants from [Dawson] Turner and [Robert Bransby] Francis for a "cryptogamical manual" [probably "Synopsis plantarum seu enchiridium botanicum ..."]. Requests from [James] Sowerby: 'Spaerocarpus' of Micheli, 'Lichen scopulorum', 'Lichen omphalodes', 'Lichen canescens', 'Lichen muscorum', 'Lichen trapeiformis', 'Lichen inclusus', 'Lichen gelides', 'Bryssus nigra', 'Bryssus barbata', and rare mosses. Requests from Smith: 'Mentha', rare grasses, 'Veronica hybrida', and 'Sibthorpia europaea. Several of the named plants requested have pencilled ticks.

Received Smith's and [John] Pitchford's parcels of plants. Intends to send a paper on mosses, lichens and ferns for next "Linnean Transactions". Asks after "Flora Britannica" and [James] Sowerby's "English Fungi". Sends some grasses for Smith's judgement and requests specimens of others, Smith has marked those he sent from a longer list: 'Scirpus multicaulis', 'Poa procumbens', 'Dactylis striola', 'Festuca vivipara', 'Festuca uniglumis', 'Arundo calamagrostis', 'Triticum loliaceum', 'Juncus maritimus', 'Juncus spicatus', 'Carex loliacea', 'Carex filiformis', and 'Carex tomenstosa'. Note from Smith that he sent: 'Poa subcaerulea', 'Carex pauciflora', 'Carex chordorrhiza', 'Avena distichophylla', 'Phalaris ariculata', and 'Scirpus caespitosus'.
