Sending 30 roots each of new or little known Sicilian 'Orchideae', described in [Antonius] Bivona [Bernardi's] "Sicularum plantarum": 'Orchis longibracteata', 'Orchis purpurea', 'Orchis longicornu', 'Orchis acuminata', 'Ophrys tenthredinifera', and 'Ophrys lutea', also added roots of 'Arum tenuifolium'; a proportion being sent to Kew, hopes they will become permanently introduced. Botanists of Sicily "anxiously looking" for second volume of "Prodromus florae graecae"; believes his herbarium may contain species which escaped [John] Sibthorp.

Hopes Smith recovered from the indisposition he suffered when he "honoured our town [Liverpool] with [his] instructive visit". Forced to give up botanical part of his Brazilian collections so as to focus on the zoological side, which is his main interest anyway, but anxious that botany should benefit from his collecting in places where no one has been but himself; offers to present any able botanist with collection of his duplicates, on condition of results being presented to Linnean Society; asks Smith to propose it to any of his competent botanical friends.

Sends JH pamphlet on intimate connection between a country's zoology and its political statistics. Regrets that JH wished not to be nominated for presidency of R.S.L. on returning from Cape.
