Bill to Smith for two copies of Smith's "Tour to Hafod", £11 11s.

Sends above mentioned books, which have been much sought after following death of [Thomas] Johnes, has no doubt they will be much dearer. Offers to purchase another copy due to be sold on 29 June. Will enquire into the plates and blocks.

The coppers to Smith's "Tour to Hafod" are still in the possession of [Joseph Constantine] Stadler [(fl 1788-1820), engraver]; Stadler will not deliver them without an order from Smith, asks that Smith writes authorising to "sell to best advantage", would be interested in purchasing them himself. Asks if there is any engraved portrait of Smith available other than that in [Robert] Thornton's [(c 1768-1837), physician and writer on botany] "[A new illustration of the sexual system of] Linnaeus".

[Smith has briefly annotated his reply on verso of second folio:] "get £11.11/ of Longman & Co. I will give you my print by W Lane".

Apologises for not acknowledging receipt of payment from Smith. Sent a copy of the "Insects" as requested [probably Smith's "The natural history of the rarer lepidopterous insects of Georgia" (1797)], happy to supply Smith with any books, Abbot is marked 22 guineas.

Thanks for Smith's portrait, with which he intends to illustrate a copy of the "Tour to Hafod" along with portrait of [Thomas] Johnes. Sorry they have not yet sold the coppers [for "Hafod"] yet, [Joseph Constantine] Stadler [(fl 1788-1820), engraver] objects to taking them. Hopes Smith "will not be a looser by [his] American friend".

Bill to Smith for "Abbot and Smith's Insects" £14 14s.

Acknowledges recipt of Smith's 14 guineas and encloses catalogue of remaining book stock of the particular concern.

Bill to Smith for various books bought at auction on his behalf [Smith has annotated selling prices against some].

Details results of Smith's lots, including woodcut to "Lapland Tour", sold for 3s 6d; the coppers to "Tour of Hafod" £7 10s 6d; French paper intended for "Icones plantarum" £18 18s 9d, and the remaining letterpress for 29 guineas.

Finally decided that Smith has no claim under the estate of White, Cochrane & Co [publishers] farther than the payments already made by the agreement of "Flora Britannica". The present proprietors of "Flora Britannica" have no objection to corresponding with Smith about completion of the work.
