The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Astronomical matters.
Will take charge of the chronometers for Capt. Richard Copeland. Will convey anything else JH has for the Mediterranean. Too busy to reply to his letter yesterday.
Would like to print in his own Treatise on Atmospheric Phenomena JH's account of the Autora Borealis of May 1843. Had a large batch of papers from Sir Thomas Brisbane. Sends one of his weekly accounts.
Discusses work to be finished before the end of the year.
Regarding sun spots and the phrase 'cloudy stratum.'
Regarding the site of an ancient battle. Has received an actinometer for his lectures. Regarding the compressibility of liquids.
Is grateful for the present of leaves. Will try some to see if it effects a cure. Busy working for the relief of the wounded soldiers.
Will be pleased to come to dinner on Friday next.
Has received 50 copies of the enclosed work [?]. Stresses its value.
Regarding the observations of JH and Giuseppe Piazzi on 'Comae.'
Will be happy to accommodate him.
Meeting with J. C. Spencer (Viscount Althorp) next Wednesday at Downing St.
Encloses account of an explosion against the side of the Royal George, which he first showed to Gilbert Elliot (2nd Earl of Minto). Presents Mrs. Beaufort's best wishes to Margaret Brodie Herschel.
Has read his article on the Musical Scales. Has been working at a theory regarding the scales based on laws derived from the Bible. Submitted it to Dr. [H. J.?] Gauntlett, who was impressed. Would like JH's opinion.
Has been absent down the Bristol Channel so did not receive his communication until his return to Portishead. Does not wish to delay publication but would like to see the manuscript before it goes to press. Encloses answers to some of JH's queries. Has the chart of currents ready.
Would like to see him at dinner tomorrow.
Is flattered by receiving a copy of JH's interesting pamphlet. When he has read it will offer some of his own thoughts on the subject. Would be grateful for JH's comments.
Encloses Merz's catalogue of instruments.
Comments on his observations made that year in the Alps. Hopes to return again with more instruments.
Asks for support in gaining a pension from the army.
