The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Wants JH's views on a 20-foot reflector. Inviting him to Cambridge. With this letter he encloses Volume 2 of the Cambridge Observatory's Observations and Lectures in Optics.
Sending a paper by J. J. Lister on the microscope and some crystals of Borate of Soda. Carlo Gemmellaro has been examining temperature of air in the subterranean passage near Nicolosi. Hopes JH will visit Tottenham; would give him great pleasure to see him.
Reports on discussion in Astronomical Society council whether to favor JH's recommendation of a new nomenclature regarding the angular positions of double stars, or to support JS's preference for William Herschel's method. Other activities concerning the Astronomical Society.
Returns the Edinburgh Review. Has written to the Morning Chronicle regarding G. B. Rodney's (1st Baron Rodney) naval maneuver. Sends three pamphlets.
Does he want a scale ordered form George Dollond for Wilhelm Struve? Will not be in London when Struve arrives. Has written a paper on the Standards for the R.S.L. and will send JH a copy when printed. Comments on the comparison of Standards.
His brother-in-law, Moses Montefiore, desires to become a member of the Athenaeum and he would be grateful for JH's assistance in this matter.
