The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Regrets to hear that he proposes to retire from the captaincy of the Hawkhurst Company of the Rifle Volunteers.
Mostly taken up with JH advising AH about changing his course of studies at Cambridge, together with some family news from home.
Would like confirmation of his London address before returning the books. Has borrowed from the Society the barometric observations made at Cracow.
Announces 18 June meeting of Board of Visitors of Royal Observatory at R.S.L. Subject will be proposed grant by [E. A. S. Seymour, 12th] Duke of Somerset to [Peter A.] Hansen.
Hopes JH will attend [18 June] meeting of Visitors of [Royal] Observatory to discuss letter of [E. A. S. Seymour, 12th] Duke of Somerset, belittling value of [P. A.] Hansen's observations.
Sends 'something about the Moon.' It is all the printer has produced so far.
Urges JH to attend the next meeting of the Board of Visitors of the Royal Observatory, especially as GA believes some of the members of the Board do not understand the scientific problem [?].
Saw J. S. Perring for only a short time. Explained his own theories and models of the Great Pyramid at the Royal Institution. Enlarges on his theories. Has been invited to lecture to the Sino-Egyptian Society.
Is giving a dinner for the Hawkhurst Rifle Volunteers and would welcome JH's presence.
18 June meeting of Board of Visitors of Royal Observatory will begin one hour earlier. Encloses copy of letter of [E. A. S. Seymour, 12th] Duke of Somerset, and response from Astronomer Royal [G. B. Airy].
Enquires whether JH wants a paper published in R.S.P.T. or in R.S.L. Proceedings.
Thanks TS for TS's publication on lighthouse illumination; adds some of JH's own ideas on the subject.
Describes efforts to obtain position at Oxford's Radcliffe Observatory. Advocates that AH and all variable star observers follow a uniform plan. Laments confusion over indefiniteness of term 'magnitude' and his lack of proper equipment and adequate recognition. Invites AH to visit.
Intends going to Spain for the eclipse to make observations on solar radiation. Would like advice on the type of actinometer to use.
Asks JH's opinion on CP's eclipse observations plans, especially on which equipment to use. Intends to use a 'diagonal solar eyepiece' during the eclipse. Plans to observe carefully and to sketch solar flares.
Comments on the behavior of Sirius with its companion, and on the likelihood of the existence of the inter-Mercurial planet.
Believing JH gives TS credit for a proposal not TS's own, clarifies TS's work in lighthouse illumination.
[Writing under the pseudonym 'Redde Suum Cuique'], JH notes that a recently published process for recovering silver from old plate was in fact anticipated by James Keir in a 1790 R.S.P.T. paper. Attacks a recent misuse of the word 'actinometer.'
