EW and daughter look forward to visiting Slough on Monday with Mr. Beckwith.
Needs the Ephemerides for 1769. Can he ask [James?] Graham[e] for any old pamphlets. Is expecting William Whewell and George Peacock and would be glad if JH can come as well.
Received JH's letter [29 Apr. 1821] with 'Memoirs of Astronomical Society' and observations of recent solar eclipse. Has not published eclipse calculations. Convinced that moon's diameter is accurately determined. Latitudes, longitudes for sites in Finland. 1820-22 observations from Ã…bo. Design of new Ã…bo observatory. New instruments from Munich.
Encloses list of books on Ireland as requested. Her brother is in London. Hopes that JH will visit them should he come to Ireland.
Encloses table of star declinations for 1815 and 1820, received from F. W. Bessel, who used different meridian circles for each year.
Orders lithograph of enclosed letter and tables for Astronomical Society.
Leaving for two weeks in Netherlands.
Regarding the construction of the model machine. Things appertaining to the Netherlands. Regarding his new chemical theory.
Has no errands for JH in Holland or Flanders. Asks for details on JH's and Charles Babbage's method of determining heights by barometrical observations. Hopes to use this to confirm TY's method by 'my formula deduced from refraction.'
Orders 30 copies of lithograph.
Sends circular of F. W. Bessel's 'Declinations.' Sent paper on 25 July for Royal Society of Edinburgh, similar to DB's paper outlined in previous issue [of Edinburgh Journal of Science]. Argues for continuity of color spectrum versus 'per saltum' transitions.
Thanks for the publications by FB that FB sent. JH has sent the copies to the persons FB designated. Discusses the 'enigmatical difference in the places of the stars as observed here & on the Continent.' Cannot explain this.
Leaving for Calais tomorrow. Unable to see Mr. Beckwith. Hopes [Susan] White arrived safely in Slough. Encloses Astronomical Society's notice of F. W. Bessel's determination of declinations of fixed stars.
Received JH's letter from Calais. Visitors to Slough. Marquess of Londonderry committed suicide.
Travels with James Grahame from Calais to Brussels. Visit with General Pierre Cambronne and tour of Waterloo. Leaving tomorrow for Antwerp. Mr. Gibson is useless as traveling companion.
William Herschel is dangerously ill. Hurry home.
Books per N. M. Rothschild have not yet arrived. Has arranged a standing order for the Vienna Observations. The Robert Molyneux clock can be dispatched at once. Agrees with JH that double stars are the test of a good telescope.
William Herschel is getting weaker, but is not in pain. Lady Mary Herschel is anxious for JH's arrival.
Invitation to JH to meet some friends of AL's.
