The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Was unable to confer with Chancellor about JH's proposal [1847-7-1]. Suggests arrangements JH should make before presenting copies [of JH's Cape Results] to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Has placed Mr. Yorke's room at JH's disposal; gives times of meals.
Sending a volume of poetry by D. P. Starkey and would like JH's views on its merits. Is recovering slowly from an illness.
People do not consider JH vain. If JH wants to give his [portrait of JH; see JH's 1847-7-1] to people, this would not be considered vanity on his part. Gives impressions of U. J. J. Leverrier after meeting him at the Royal Observatory.
Please send papers relating to 'the matter in agitation' between Hudson's Bay Company and R.S.L. CW will forward these to Admiral [Francis] Beaufort.
Asks if JH observed Gamma Scorpii as a double star; sends observations of it from W. S. Jacob in India. W. S. Jacob observes Neptune.
Gratitude for receipt [of JH's Cape Results]. To assure delivery of copies to foreign sovereigns, JH must first write letter to minister of each legation asking for royal acceptance. Lists nine ambassadors with whom AP has already communicated.
Invites JH to join royal commission to investigate May [1847] collapse of railway bridge over Dee River by designing experiments to test engineering limits of cast iron. Names other members. All expenses will be paid.
Encloses answers from three foreign ambassadors. Hopes JH does not have trouble.
Threatened at Cambridge with [C. E.?] Law and Mr. Fielding. Wishes JH would write a letter of support for [J. G. Shaw-?] Lefevre. Is short of helpers but not overworked. William Empson is anxious for a review of Kosmos. Goes on Thursday to vote for [Henry?] Goul[d]burn and Lefevre.
JH must come to London to supervise distribution [of JH's Cape Results] to foreign sovereigns. Received more replies from ambassadors.
Has arrived from Paris and will continue to Hamburg. Regrets not being able to revisit Collingwood. Requests JH's work concerning the southern skies.
Thanks JH for Gamma Scorpii observations. Plans to have Edinburgh Observatory record observations of 2-3000 stars over 30 years. Edinburgh observations for 1841 published.
Gratitude for receipt of 'splendid volume' [JH's Cape Results].
Copy [of JH's Cape Results] sent to French king. Kings of Hanover and Holland have accepted. AP today paid £1000 to Drummonds [for JH's publishing costs].
