Regarding a reflector for observation of the forthcoming eclipse.
Please send GW information about a wondrous coca [cocaine] reported by Mrs. Gordon.
Thanks for prompt response and JH's sharing such a scarce commodity [cocaine; see GW's 1870-7-22]. Hopes it will heal depression that interferes with GW's work.
Acknowledges receipt of letter and papers from G. A. Erman.
B.A.A.S. in Liverpool approved £50 grant to G. A. Erman, to be administered by Erman and JH, for computation of Gaussian constant for 1839.
Comments on JH's concerns about actinometric measurements [see JH's 1870-9-20]; recommends the study of periodicity of waves on Atlantic Coast.
Reports on status of John Robinson's eye following cataract surgery.
Explains error in B.A.A.S. report on grant for G. A. Erman. Will notify George Griffith.
Notice of £50 grant from B.A.A.S. to JH and G. A. Erman to support H. J. R. Petersen in recomputing Gaussian constant for 1839. [JH annotation: £40 remitted 13 Mar. 1871; £10 remaining.]
Sorry to learn of error in B.A.A.S. resolution regarding computation of Gaussian constant. JH's proposal, explained by G. G. Stokes, was passed by Committee of Recommendations. Errors occurred later, in transcription. Will resubmit JH's proposal to Council.
Clerical error of '1839' instead of '1829' in JH's proposal has occurred in many other reports. No need to wait for Council approval. Will also inform G. A. Erman.
Announces business meeting of Council on 11 Mar.
Sends prints of solar photographs taken last week at Kew, as requested by Warren de La Rue. Regrets that picture on 11 Feb. was unsatisfactory.
Turned JH's mineral specimen over to N. S. Maskelyne. Poor health of GW's wife.
Would like his views on the correct definition of a billion, to settle an argument.
May be interested in seeing the enclosed [probably RS:HS 19.229]. Outlines his proposals, which he hopes to get adopted in Ireland. Trusts the east winds are not affecting him.
Many thanks for his kind note. Pleased to find he is in good health and taking an interest in the work of the youngsters. Hopes Alexander (JH's son) showed him his plan for a binocular reflector.
Bank intends to publish letters and papers relating to 'Gold Coinage Controversy.' Does JH object to including JH's 'Half a dozen Propositions respecting the Gold Coinage'? [JH annotation: Answered 4 Feb; approved, and enclosed corrected copy.]
Sends proof of Bank's article on gold coinage. Tell HC of any corrections that JH may want.
