Summary:

Thanks for "Linnean Transactions", hopes it will long continue, and plants; will try to sell some items from them though botanists few in number here; passed on enclosures to [Johan] Acrel and [Olof] Swartz. Asks after parcels he sent Smith and [Sir Joseph] Banks in May via English surgeon Griffiths. Few copies of Smith's works can be sold in Sweden but requests some copies.

Compared 'Festuca spaducea', identical to 'Anthoxantum paniculatum', with specimen in Burser's "Herbarium" vol 1 p.46; comment on 'Phalaris oryzoides'; attaches drawing of 'Dianthus virgineus' [Smith annotation: "in Herb."] from "Herbarium" vol 11 p.99.

Intends to send his recently published dissertations, and dried plants. Certain that there are plants in his collections from the Cape [of Good Hope] not in Linnaean herbarium, but until his "Flora capensis" is published difficult establish what Smith may require. Intends to send a paper for "Linnean Transactions" vol 2.

Summary:

Toscanelli has received books sent by Smith. [Rodrigo] de Sousa [Coutinho] pleased with Smith's works and sends respects. Smith's views largely concurrent with his own on plants of uncertain classification, although disagrees on 'Cynanchum muscicapum', 'Carduus erisithales' in [Carlo] Allioni's opinion 'Carduus rivularis'. Habitat for 'Festuca flavescens'. Doubts on 'Allium nigrum', more likely to be 'Allium narcissi' or 'Allium alpinum'. Asks Smith to compare 'Androsacea lactea' with 'Androsacea septentrionalis'. Would like Smith's opinion on his naming of 'Saxifraga elongata'. Confirmation of 'Aira vallesiaca'. Has named 'Ranunculus curvatu' 'Ranunculus lacerus'. Asks for a transcript of pages from "Hortus Kewensis" on 'Primula' to assist in his work on 'Primula emarginata' and 'Saxifraga lingulata', and pages from another work. Has received specimen of 'Pilularia' and seeds of 'Cornucopiae cucullatum'. Smith elected to the Academy of Sciences. Requests rare seeds from Smith for a friend, a copy of "Flora Lapponica", and information on the new edition of "Systema Vegetabilium".

Summary:

Moved to write to Smith on account of his "glorious reputation" and his "benevolent and friendly spirit". He has been working on a biography of Linnaeus for the last three years; requests response from Smith on several questions regarding the purchase of the Linnaean collections, as several unconfirmed or false tales are circulating: 1. what price did Smith pay and in which year; 2. what did the purchase include; 3. asks if Smith is producing new editions of "Species plantarum" and "Systema naturae", as reported in French edition of Pulteney's "General view of the writings of Linnaeus", and whether Smith has published anything else based on Linnaeus' collections; 4. requests one or two memorable letters from Linnaeus' correspondence; 5. asks after foundation of the Linnean Society.

News of Linnaeus' widow and daughters. A monument to Linnaeus to be erected in front of the Uppsala Academy's new garden, at royal expense. His friend, Professor Giseke of Hamburg, is to publish Linnaeus' "Praelectiones in ordines naturales plantarum"

Also a page taken from "Benlag; zu des Hamburgischen unparthenischen Correspondenten" no. 160, dated 7 Oct 1791, in German.
