Summary:

Thanks for Smith's reply. Would like to make Smith's acquaintance in London when he next comes for his annual visit, although she is compelled to leave the country in May. Took note of Smith's hint of introducing botany into a novel although believes modern tastes in fiction for "gigantic and impossible horrors" will not make it appear vapid enough to the "admirers of spectre novels and cavern adventures", nonetheless has included a little in her latest [presumably "The Young Philosopher" (1798)].

Summary:

Unfortunate that in having two houses she cannot live in either of them; wishes she could have seen Smith but will be pleased to see Corrêa at Upper Baker Street, [London]. Asks if she can send the drawings of her sister's, Mrs Dorset, which she did as a beginning of her plan for "the 26 classes". An unexpected domestic occurance has made her "heart ache & hand tremble, but they are used to it, & both should by this time know better".

Asks for engravings of the drawings of fungi he previously sent including: 'Peziza onotica', 'Boletus cinereus', 'Boletus rubiginosus', 'Stemonitis leucostyla', 'Sphaeria ochracea', and 'Lycogala conica', [Smith has marked each with a cross], and for prints of the treatise as he is publishing his "Synopsis fungorum". Expecting packet of dried plants, requests 'Filices' and 'Lycoperdon phalloides'. Sends regards to Bracy Clark and [James] Dickson.

Smith has summarised his reply on verso of second folio: returns five of the drawings to be named; his paper shall be printed in fifth "Linnean Transactions" volume; intends to name a 'Persoonia', was beaten by [Martin] Vahl to name a 'Schraderia'; will send dried plants; requests 'Coliforme'.

Summary:

In red ink at top of first folio: "Mr Davall's last unfinished letter".

Revived by Smith's letter of 17 January 1798. His health totally destroyed, intellect affected and faculty of speech impaired at age of 35 by "frequent attacks of one of the most terrible" convulsive disorders. Fears he was too copiously bled on 2 February 1797, losing 150 ounces between that date and end of March and blisters applied to his leg caused violent cramps and tortured his nerves. Attended by a too young doctor trained at Pavia who thinks his ills come from an obstinate constipation caused by too frequent use of purgatives. Has taken a deluge of 'Valerian officinalis', 'Cinchona officinalis', flores zinci, 'Moschus', 'Viscum album', and since 10 January wholly on milk diet.

Letter unfinished and unsent, enclosed in Henriette Davall's letter of 10 October 1798 informing Smith of Edmund's death.

East India seeds received from [Robert] Brown are already growing. Found an undescribed 'Geranium sanguineum' very similar to 'Geranium lancastriense'. Has increased his collection of' 'Orchidiae'. 'Erica glutinosa' in flower in his garden. Seeds Smith sent are growing, including the supposed 'Adansonia', 'Supatrens calsamina', creepers, and the "Carica papaya". Description of two 'Sophora monosperma' he has raised. Requests that the genus similar to 'Dillenia' that Smith is to name after him be named 'Valentiana', asks if the disputed 'Dillenia indica' is of this new genus.

Summary:

Thanks for letter and East India seeds; offers to send plants to Smith's friends, particularly Lady [Amelia] Hume. Sent [James] Sowerby specimen of 'Metrosideros hispida' to draw and dry; observations, thinks it could be 'Eucalyptus'. His city honours [Alderman of London 1798-1803] a "sacrifice" to his conviction of the "serious nature of the times"; attacks those who "skulk" from their responsibilities.

Summary:

Thanks for the two packets of seeds and letter; when he sold his property at Hayes he left his plant collection there, and is now renting a residence at Mortlake, [Surrey], on the banks of the Thames. Has given the seeds to Lady Aylesford [Louisa Finch, wife of Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford (1751-1812)]; whilst visiting saw her "Hortus Pictus" of British plants, including 50 in her own hand; also saw Mr Griffiths, the cryptogamist of Snowdon, who brough 'Subularia acquatica'. The only new plant he has found in the summer is 'Serapias latifolia'.

Sorry not to see Smith during his Norfolk expedition. Asks after "Linnean Transactions" vol 4.

Summary:

Visit of Mrs Kett [of Seething Hall, Norfolk] to Oxford Botanic Garden, "it is singular on any occasion to meet a lady who is really conversant with plants". Informed that Smith is "destroying" a new 'Verbascum', hopes that Smith will soon examine this genera but believes Smith better employed working on 'Gramina' and mints ['Mentha']. Informed of Smith giving the name 'Campanula alpina' to his plant 'Campanula rhomboidea', which resembles 'Campanula pulla' in habit and foliage. Accepts Smith's offer to send specimens of each species and variety of mint ['Mentha']. After seeing Smith's new genera in last issue of "Linnean Transactions" suggests that the name 'Danbeia' be given to a new genus in honour of Henry Danvers [Earl of Danby (1573-1644)], founder of Oxford Botanic Garden.

Summary:

Has not heard from Smith since 1796, uncertain if this is due to the turbulent times or if Smith is even alive. Receives curious plants from his botanic correspondents, believes many are unknown in Europe. His attempts at describing them hindered by inability to determine the trivial names without the Linnaean herbarium. Asks for Smith's observations on plants he has previously sent and asks permission to send more. Struggles with complexities of 'Carex', 'Asclepias', 'Vaccinium', 'Aster', 'Solidago', 'Viola', 'Salix', and 'Hedysarum'. Gives brief descriptions of local species of 'Vaccinium' he has already sent to help Smith determine the trivial name.
