Received Smith's letter of 17 [April 1822]; in spite of 12-month interruption of their corresondence his regard for Smith "unaltered and unalterable". The Linnean Society blackballed a man "because he had not treated their President with the respect which he so highly deserves". [Joseph] Sabine has sent Smith a paper of his. Printing of "Linnean Transactions" goes on "very slowly", which vexes him much as he knows the Society at large will blame him for delay.

All disappointed not to see Smith on 7 [May 1822], Linnean Society Council meeting adjourned until 21 May in the hope that Smith can attend. New FMLS elected.

Thanks for Smith's letter of 20 [August 1822], happy to hear of his recovery from cholera attack. His summer plans disrupted, hopes to see Smith in London before he can go to Norwich. Sent Smith's letter for "Linnean Transactions" to the printer but uncertain what title to give it.

Fate of Lord Londonderry [Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry (1769-1822), statesman, committed suicide] "has indeed been a sad one", feels he has lost a friend. Did not realise Mrs [Charlotte] Lynn's [daughter of Samuel Goodenough] death was sudden, Mrs Macleay's sister also died suddenly.

Reassures Smith her maid is capable of carrying his parcel from Surrey Street to Keswick, [near Norwich], and she will then be able to get to work on the letters. They have been in London, including visit to Samuel Hoare's at Hampstead, where she met Mr [John] Bowring [(1792-1872), politician], who is just returned from Spain.

Returns papers, including: manuscript of [Pehr] Löfling's [(1729-1756), Swedish botanist] with note by [Daniel] Scheidenburg [(b 1720), Swedish clergyman]. Encloses list of her arrangement of [Carl Peter] Thunberg's letters; he has a "cramped & puzzling" hand

Up to four hundred visitors from England and the continent a day visiting Fonthill Abbey, Wiltshire, [home of William Beckford (1760-1844)]. When he visited Fonthill with Sir Richard Hoare and [Daniel] Lysons [(1762-1834)] there were four hundred carriages and horses. Duke of Wellington [Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852)], Sir Abraham Hume and Mr Cust have also visited Fonthill. Received plants from [William] Jack [(1795-1822)] described in his "Malay[an] Miscellanies" including three new species of 'Nepenthes'. Received Brazilian plants Dr [John] Sims [(1749-1831)]. Received a 'Arbutus laurifolia' from Mexico. Purchased [Franz Wilhelm] Sieber's [(1789-1844)] Cretan, Egyptian, and Holy Land plants, requests Smith to send specimen of each species of "'Arb.'" for comparison. Also asks Smith to send [Franciscus] Cupani's [(1657-1710) Italian botanist] works.

News from Linnean Society including new members, [Samuel Goodenough] incapacitated by gout, delay of publication of volume. Lord Grenville [William Wyndham Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville (1759-1834) politician and prime minister, 1806-1807] invites him to Dropmore House, [Buckinghamshire], he is very keen about plants and has allocated twenty acres for cultivating pines, Lambert sent him two species from Boyton, [Wiltshire]. A dinner attended by Barrow of the Admiralty and Captain Bowles, information on a trip to Peru. An account of the Island of Crete by [Franz Wilhelm] Sieber [(1789-1844)], reminds Smith that he has purchased Sieber's collections. Requests to borrow book by Cupani and specimens of woody 'Dianthus' and Thunberg's 'Thuja dolabrata'. Captain Franklin and John Richardson's "account of the northern land expedition" to be printed soon, Richardson is comparing his plants with Lambert's. Smith has noted that he replied "with Cupani ed. 2, imperfect, & Lehmann's "Asperifoliae" part 1. Sent a bit of 'Thuja dolabrata'.

Sends greetings, as when he intends to be in Norwich Smith will be away on a tour. Sends coins.

Sends two copies of his book ["Beitrage zur chorographischen Kenntniss des Flussgebiets" (1822)]. He is commissioned by the King to produce a "Flora Hannoverana"; intends to arrange it on example of "Flora Danica". Requests exchange of "interesting and rare plants of England" in return for "several rare and new species of African plants"; he has a large collection from last 17 years.

Apologises for being unable to send Smith Essequebo plants as he had already given his duplicates to [Joseph Franz] Jacquin. Proposes a German edition of "English botany", regarding which he has already written to [James] Sowerby requesting the plates; few copies of the original in Germany owing to its high price; if Smith agrees requests critical notes on the species.

Desires Smith's consent to [Christian Friedrich] Schwägrichen [(1775-1853)] being proposed as FMLS. Lists Schwägrichen's achievements: professor of botany and professor of natural history at Leipzig, formerly held by Hedwig and Leske.

Requests Smith's "English Botany", which includes almost all native German plants, at a reduced price. Sturm has only just begun his "Deutschlands Flora". Offers to send G D Ehret's "hinc ad centesimam usque produxit B.C. Vogel. In aes incidit et vivis coloribus reprae-sentavit Haid 1750-73" and Schreber's Beschreibung der Gräser".

Sending 9 plates and 2 patterns of "Flora Graeca". Asks how Smith goes on with the new "Flora Anglica" ["English Flora"], and if Smith provides a list will make up all deficiencies and a supplement to "English botany". Believes the Linnaean system "will gain ground again".

Recollections of his visit to Smith at Norwich and [Thomas William Coke at] Holkham, Norfolk. Gratified by the attentions he received from all on his travels, especially those of Smith's aquaintances "though in humbler stations of life, are the real ornaments of society". John Corrie obliged to leave Cambridge on account of a glandular illness but has now recovered and returned to Cambridge.
