H. C. Oerstedt has been elected to the Society to replace F. W. Bessel, who has died. The Society is lacking one part of the Memoirs of the R.A.S.
Has sent to the R.S.L. Vol. 2 of the Memoirs of the American Academy.
Should have returned the paper before, but has been very busy with the Annual Report and other matters. Paper seems worthy of publication.
By which of JH's photographic processes can drawings be made permanent? Hopes printing goes on well.
Has been planning the new duties for officers of the R.A.S. now that Francis Baily is dead. Hopes JH will consent to become president now, in order to give the prestige of the Society a boost.
Is beginning to work on the Annual Report. Has he any information about F. W. Bessel or J. J. L. Lalande's catalogue?
Received P. S. Laplace's [book] from Paris and sent it to Mr. Stewart as JH directed.
Happy to hear that JH is to preside over the Physical and Mathematical Section. Will present Miss Robina Young to Lady Herschel before leaving for Southampton.
Describes conditions and instruments at Edinburgh Observatory. Observatory assistant Alexander Wallace works on reduction of Thomas Henderson's transit observations.
Thanks JH for spotting error in a publication about the Edinburgh Observatory. Discusses 'the planet that is expected to be found beyond Uranus.' Asks JH to help him send astronomical news to Thomas Maclear.
Congratulates JH and Margaret Herschel on birth of a daughter [Francisca?]. Asks JH's opinion of the ideas of 'lines of force' and 'lateral shakes.' Conducts a force experiment with J. P. Gassiot.

Would like to see C. F. Schönbein's invention tried but has not the means to afford any assistance at the moment. Understands that Edward Sabine is to introduce Schönbein to the Master General of Ordnance, so he will be in good hands.
Will call at Collingwood. Wants to show JH some experiments and asks JH to have phosphorous and starch ready.
Discovered an agent that renders his paper tough and waterproof. Sends sample for JH's inspection. Treated paper is highly explosive and can discharge a gun.
