Will inform all foreign publishers that John Murray will supply 1000 copies of heliotype plates [for Expression] for £75. CD would not have used so many photos had he foreseen the cost, but woodcuts would not have done.

CD has given translation right [for Expression] to Dutch publisher Joh. Ijkema.

Asks JM to send copies of all his books to Anton Dohrn.

Koch [of Schweizerbart] requires 3000 sets of copies of the heliotype plates [for German edition of Expression].

Thanks for note. Believes agreement with Henry Colburn does not cover 2d ed. of Journal of researches. Regrets Murray’s Colonial Library series will require one-fifth reduction of text; will consult Lyell on how to reduce scientific part. Prefers that JM consult with Colburn, but in case he declines, encloses draft of letter he would send to Colburn. Anticipates co-operation of Colburn, as he has paid CD nothing for 1st ed. of Journal.

Arrangements for foreign editions [of Expression]. Delay by Heliotype Company is provoking.

Is certain he never signed any paper with Henry Colburn or he would have kept a copy as he did of FitzRoy’s agreement. Wishes JM success in his negotiations with Colburn; asks him to remind Colburn that the copperplate has been left with editor of German edition.

CD clarifies his relationship with Henry Colburn with regard to a 2d ed. of the Journal of researches. "I never signed any agreement of any kind; but the separate sale of my Journal in the first edition was with my verbal consent & approval."

Pleased to hear that Colburn has behaved more liberally than CD anticipated. Three numbers of the Colonial Library, each of 171 pages, will hold his Journal of researches. Accepts financial arrangements for its publication offered by JM.

Has lost a week’s work on Journal of researches owing to poor health. Has copperplate of map, and favours inclusion. Thinks book should be called a "Journal".

CD is delighted and astonished at sale of Expression,

and pleased with sale of others, except Descent. He fears a new edition of that work may never be required. Would have liked to bring out a thoroughly revised one.

Thanks JM for £210 on last reprint of Origin [6th ed.]. Pleased by its sale

and by the success of Expression.

Will send MS of first part [of Journal of researches] on Thursday morning, enclosing suggested title and dedication. Urges inclusion of map. Requests another £50 for copyright, as offer of £100 was made when only two parts were planned.

Obliged to JM for acceding to request for an additional £50 [for Journal of researches, 2d ed.]. Will reconsider title when type is set up. Gives up the map. Writes about other details of publication.

Has sent off MS of first part [of Journal of researches, 2d ed.]. Has so much to add about Fuegians [at beginning of second part] and so much to condense and rewrite in scientific part that he may not have second part ready at end of month; it depends on his health, which is good lately.

Writes to report progress on MS of second part [of Journal of researches].

Asks JM to look at William Clowes’s arrangement of the title. CD had intended Journal to stand alone, so scientific part would be less prominent. His health is poor.

Agrees with JM’s criticism of preface [of Journal of researches, 2d ed.].

If copies [of part one of Journal of researches] are to be sent to periodicals for review, suggests Gardeners’ Chronicle.

MS for second part will be ready in four to five days.
