From W. E. Darwin to Sara Darwin [c. 1 October 1881]

Extract from a letter of Wm. to Sara w. she sent me—

The walk to Bex was very beautiful, partly through chestnut groves, of which I am so fond; & the evening lights made every thing look so lovely.

My guide was a very nice fellow & we talked about Cannes & the Republic & Tunis— he apparentrly read his newspaper very carefully

This is a grand wild spot. the Hotel is on a bleak promontory of rock overlooking the glacier which winds below one; far below one sees on the opposite side of the Rhone valley the Semplon road winding up the hills. I find something fascinating about the stillness & desolation & grand scale of the mountains & glaciers.

I went to see Tyndall & sat there 12 an hr & found him very pleasant. I go to lunch tomorrow at 12.30—
