From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 3 September [1882]

Down, Beckenham, Kent.

Sunday | Sep. 3.

My dear George

I am afraid you must have had a horrid passage, the storm continued here all day & all night; & indeed all yesterday tho' w. not so much rain.

I felt very dismal the poor couple going off like Adam & Eve (the world before them where to choose) but it was a great relief.

Franke thanked me with some feeling; but they have not had the wisdom to go to a cheap place, & are now at a Hotel at Windsor.

Laura came in the P. M. & is well & pleasant as usual. Bernard is very happy to have her & has set her to work cutting soldiers as usual— What very bad news about the Dublin Constables— It will be interesting to hear what opinions you fall in with.

Ida's visit w. Effie was perfectly smooth & pleasant & she sang a great many duets w. her— I packed off sweet little Razimoffsky on on Friday w. 2 carriages & 2 attendants & he met Ida at Charing X—

She has been cleaning & tidying and at the grimiest stage, Mrs Jebb & niece in white muslins appeared. They were to dine w. her that day—

Actually a bright day; but we never have two together, so they do little good.

No more news, so I will see what turns up tomorrow

yours my dear G— | E. D—

I have heard from Sibella B. C. that poor Mr Norman is dying Congestion of lung without very much suffering & I hope it will not be long
