From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin [20 April 1884]

My dear George

I have just got your letter & it is most provoking your being so unwell just now. I have no doubt it is rheumatism. I found Dickson on Thursday night in such a violent pain round the chest & under the arm, that except for her not being feverish I sh^d have been sure it was pleurisy— I had the Doctor & tho it has lasted for a long time off & on in exactly the same spot, nothing has come of it but her feeling very unwell & having a cold— Rose w^d be much disappted not to see you & you w^d also be v. sorry to miss the Galtons yesterday. The Leonards hurry thro tomorrow as fast as possible in order to keep their time at Camberley— They would have much liked to meet you & Maud here— They went to the play at Paris, but for a few days there was no play but one called "Relache" advertized at the Theatres doors wh. puzzled them at first.

The Protheros called on Sat—I think in hope of seeing you & Mrs J & Maud—& also M^rs Myers (senior) & M^rs Fred. She was very affectionate about you & said you had promised to consult her about a wife. She is always civil & nice & I am to go & see her—

M^rs Myers is rather stern & awful as Horace found her long ago at Cheltenham—

Margaret Shaen left us yesterday— I always feel her to be like one of the family.

The tennis court was set up yesterday & Fr & Leo played some hours— on Friday night the Therm. was at 20 & Bourne pronounces that all the fruit blossoms are killed. I hope today is better— I don't know why Maud inspires such confidence that she is sweet & kind all through. I think it is partly her extreme naturalness. Ida & H. were hoping they might poss catch a sight of her & you when they return in the 1^st week of May— They are deeply interested in all your affairs
