From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 14 September [1889]

Down, Farnborough, Kent.

My dear George

I have had a pleasant letter from Maud, wh. I will answer to you as her address is doubtful. We have had a beaut. hot week too hot for me, but keeping the children out all day— On Thursday a brake w. 11 passengers went to the Crystal P. Agnes undertook your 2 & so I was glad Helen could go, & they all enjoyed the fireworks & every thing heartily. Next Thursday the "balance" is to go—

So many maids & some children (but not yours) have been sick & disordered that Frank had the drains examined. They were quite right however. Bernard has been most jolly all the time, & this evg he goes to visit Jackson, wh he thinks a gt lark—

He is dazzled like every one else w. the splendour of Jackson's appearance—where they saw him at the station.

The Leos go today to Mrs Winkworth's in Surrey or Sussex—

yours dear G— | E. D.

Your two have been perfectly well all the time. Bessy is off to Wales— I think Boy must have the same immunity from pain that Leo. has–- He cried very little from a wasp's sting in the foot— I suppose it was a torpid one— I have them in the mgs; but see v. little of them this fine weather—
