From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 20 August [1891]

Down, Farnborough, Kent.

My dear George

Here is a rather old letter of W's which I do not want again.

I will contribute to the fund for the sketches.

I am glad you are safe away from any more work at Cambridge & I hope you will like the place— It was pleasant to find your extra lecture such a success. Sir J. & Lady Hooker & the 2 young boys leave us today. Bessy & I regretted not having one of you, & it was a pity we did not manage better; but things went off pretty well. Lady H. wants nothing more than to see her boys happy & comfortable & she & I had family talks. A few small larks turned up, one was going to see F. Lubbocks Alpine garden, wh. Sir J. was interested in & admired. Lady Derby called & proposed his going to Holwood & Lord D would shew him a celebrated larch— However he sat reading & was not to be stirred. Then there was the flower show yesterday & a drive— Laura has been invaluable, always pleasant & ready to talk & play Halma w. Joey who is 14 months younger than B & taller & much broader than he is— a model of good manners.

yours my dear George w. love to Maud–- | E. Darwin I enclose a letter of Leo to be burnt—

Franks is at Cardiff & Ellen is very anxious about a former governess who is very ill in London— Ellen has been up to see her & is going again— I am afraid she is very unfit for it—

I attribute your last sharp feverish attack to exertion when you were not fit for it
