From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 7 October [1891]

Down, Farnborough, Kent.

Oct 7.

My dear George

It was pleasant to receive your prosperous account so soon— How lucky you were to catch the last fine day—

Yesterday it began raining about 11 & continued the whole day— The little Parslows came up thro' the rain & it was all the better as playing about a big house was just as much fun for them & it helped the children thro' the p. m. w. gt success— They have seized upon Sally at all opportunities; but she can protect herself & she enjoys it all too.

I had a few comf lines from Horace blessing opium which Mr Humphrey is very liberal about.

The acct of Hen. quite good. Dicky slept the whole day & did not want any dinner— Wm went up & down by the omnibus—

I was very tired on Tues. & was denied to visitors, whereby I escaped Lady Lub. then came Mrs Edwards bringing Lady Maine, who must be staying at the Philip Peters near Keston Mark— I was sorry afterwards not to have exerted myself to see them, partly as a slight attention to poor Lady Maine & partly to give Mrs Edwards the gratification of chaperoning Lady M. here— Lady M. enquired whether you & G. were here. She must have a dismal life & I hope she is not poor as well. We have quite fixed on Wed. for our journey & will you be so kind as to write the orders—

The time of starting seems very suitable & it will feel like nothing at all— yours my dear | G. & M— | E. Darwin

Sally is m. pleased w. Maud's pleasant scheme

Maud's pleasant acct of her travels to Hen. has been v. welcome. They have had a consultation about her w. a good Dr from Newcastle— He confirms Dr Barron that her arm & hand will eventually come quite right—also that she's not strong enough to travel for 10 days or so—

Sara made solemn prognost that it wd be too m. for Maud
