From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 23 July [1892]

Down, Farnborough, Kent.

Sat— July 23

My dear George,

It is all very delightful & the more I think about it the more I enjoy it— I feel sure that Leonard's steadfast morality & good sense will make its mark in the House & that he will get to know all the best men— My only fear is for his health. It will also be excellent for Bee—

(I have just recd your letter & I follow your advice & as it is a refusal I sent a tel.)

How I hope you will have a good passage & I shd think the middle of Aug. the v. best time. I wish you cd find time for a rush here. Leo. & B. will be here on Friday the 29. for 3 days— Could not you come for one? (N. B— I think I shd certainly have agreed about the Grove but for your advice)— The poor souls are so dreadfully tired of bustle they are longing to come away but think it wd be bad policy to be in too gt a hurry. They are both quite well & had a day's rest at Idlerocks—

We had a pleasant sight of the Galtons w. Mrs M'L— They were most cordial— F. G. had "measured" W. E. G. not long ago & thought him quite an old man physically esp. in his walk— It will be most exciting to see what happens in this most eventful bit of history.

Maud is such a brisk woman that I hope she will come with you tho' for a short time—

Sara will be here but not W. & I hope Frank & Dubba for a day— (Suppose the recount turns out against Leo—how horrid it will be)

yours my dear G. & M. | E. Darwin
