From Emma Darwin to Maud Darwin 5 August [1892]

Down, Farnborough, Kent.

Friday Aug 5

My dear Maud

Thank G. for his letter & cheque. I wonder where you cycled to from Knebworth. I think it suits the Lyttons to be overdone w. ornament.

We had great fun w. the Leos. I wish you could have been here— I hope you had a fine day w. your 40 women—

The Leo's interviewed every one handsomely, even to Betsy, of wh Geo. wd appreciate the virtue.

Sara left us on Thursday— She was very sorry that she & Lily were not going across w. you—

My time here is going dreadfully fast— We shall have been here 7 weeks on Monday next. I suppose you feel your voyage very near & have many things to do— I think it is about the best time of year you could have—

I hope you will have a happy time & find Mr Du Puy much better—

William had a most civil answer from the gents whom he did not recognize on the Sunday, to his gt distress—so his mind will have been quite relieved—

Frances is now devoted to Botany, & goes out collecting with a proper box & dries the plants— Ellen plays croquet w. Bernard, & no doubt gets handsomely beaten.

I felt very flat not having the Horaces yesterday; but it will suit us quite as well later if we do not miss them altogether—

yours my dear Maud. | E. Darwin
