From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 3 September 1892

My dear George

I have had a nice letter from Gwenny, ending w. some feeble autograph kisses from Boy—& a prosperous P.S—from Helen—but you will hear all about them straight. We have had unlucky stormy weather for our assembly of L's. Horaces & Franks—but the children have played thro' it all, chiefly croquet. On Thursday we had the whole Parslow family & Mrs Sales—

Bernard & his satallites had spent some hours in arranging races & sports & the rain stopped so they came off w. great success—Maggie Parslow being the chief winner— Bernard left us yesterday to join the Dickie Rucks & go on with them to Pant. today— Rasmus is absorbed in moths & butterflies (w. v. poor success in the wind & storms) & is constantly coming to consult your collection. Leo. & Bee left us on Wed. & on Monday they go to Lich— & hope to take a house there for a month, as there are many functions on hand in Sep— After that they will come here for a real rest—but Leo. looks better & not so wan— He is not at all alarmed at the Scrutiny— His Sol. told him that Sir John was present at the recount (wh. resulted in adding 4 votes to L) very cross & objecting to the Darwin votes w. little or no reason—to the amount of 30—20 votes on his side were objected to—

Leonard saw the figure 11 posted up in Lichfield w. "Good old Darwin appended— We had a pleasant call from Mrs Sydney Buxton. She said that being a member gave you a gt advantage over being a candidate, as attentions from the latter went for very little, but were received as favours after the election from a member—

She told us that Amy had sent for her children & Miss Wendland, & had also asked Gertrude to join her—

It shews a strange impatience that she will not consent to the voyage being deferred in order to get a good ship—so they are to cross in an old, slow one, & not a large one, the Wisconsin.

The Horaces had a nice stay at Abinger—w. beaut weather & Rasmus taking to riding, wh. I hope he will keep up— I wish Ellen had brough Louisa here, instead of Miss Shappley, who of course feels a fish out of water in such a family party. She wisely does not sit w. us after dinner— The Horaces go home on Wed— I saw the arrival of the Germanic [duly] on the Friday. My best love to Maud—

I am looking forward to your letter | yours my dear George— E. Darwin

I hope you found Mr Dupuy tolerably well

P. S. Sara has given up going to America (mistakenly I think) as fearing that her aunts are too weak to see her, & that Theodora is too m. occupied— She feels it to be a final giving up of seeing her Aunts—& I feel sure she wd have been a comfort & pleasure to Theodora—

Bessy & Mlle Gonin have decided not to leave England on acct of cholera difficulties. She will come here & they may decide on some home tour.

Hen & R. have had Mildred & Stephen & Margt Lush. on their way home from Bayreuth. So she has been v. comf. & happy— & has got thro' about 12 of the baths—
