From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 19 April [1894]

The Grove, Huntingdon Road, Cambridge.

Ap 19—

My dear George

I hear that Maud had a very comf. account of you yesterday— I am glad that Dr Eccles has given way about the quantity of your food— I had a nice visit from Mrs J. W. yesterday   She seems perfectly happy about Edward who is studying medicine very hard, & so I believe he is pleasanter than he looks—

I have been very cross over last night's ministerial majority on the repeal of the coercion act— The Unionist party wants whipping up–- Horace wanted to see you when he was in London on Tues. but found he had no time— He went to see his engineering friend Mr Kennedy who is greatly overworked & found some difficulty in obtaining admittance to him— the clerk asked him "whom do you represent? myself— will you put down your name & also what your business is— so Horace put down his name & opposite "Business"—none—which amused the clerk— He stayed a very short time & preached to Mr Kennedy about over work— Bernard came in to tea & to say Goodbye–- He is glad to leave Eton on the whole— I expect he will leave home quite cheerfully today—

Hen finds it tremendously windy high up at W. Malvern esp— at Miss Stephen's little cottage wh has a beaut. view on the Hereford side— A wicked old Lady Howard de Walden has built an enormous house just below—which one can't complain of, but she has built a 7ft wall cutting off the view from the road for 12 a mile, & as she could not stop a footpath through her domain, she has built a high wall on each side out of pure spite. She is 87—& Hen. charitably hopes she will have a confined view in heaven— Mrs Stanford comes to see a patient at Dr Eccles— & she said to Mr J.W. she wd like to see you—

yours my dear George—

it is only 45° & I am tired of being in the house— I walk down every day now | E Darwin
